Okay, I am not an alarmist, but I feel the need to post this immediately. I have a dear family friend who had gastric bypass approx. 18 months ago. She is only 29 years old. She has just had a massive heart attack and a stroke and has nearly passed away. She is very lucky to be alive, especially considering what we now know. We have received a definite answer to why this happened and it is relevant to us all. For the past year, she has only been getting around 20 grams of protein per day!!! The doctors said that her body started basically eating it's own muscle for protein and guess what...the heart is our major muscle. She basically underate herself nearly to death. I know we are all guilty of this at times, me especially but not anymore. Please, please, once you get past those horrible first weeks, do not fail to get your protein in...it is crucial! I just wanted to pass this along to all of my dear friends here...we are all too important to let ourselves just die!

Kym, That is horrible but I know it is a possibility. That is why the surgeons stress protein so much. We can slow commit suicide if we don't take care of ourselves. Keep us updated on your friend. Janie

You know I stress this like crazy. Women should get between 60-80 grams of protein a day (unless you are an amazon like me and need more like 90-100). So shoot for 90 grams and you may get in what you need. There is no way to get all this with food. You will have to supplement. I encourage you all to keep a food journal and be sure you are getting your protein in daily. Fitday.com is a good site.

Thanks for reminding us all. I don't do so hot on my protein some days... Makes me want to actually drink an entire yucky protein shake right this moment! or maybe 2 of them...
