Recovery Time

Just curious on once released from the hospital how long did you need to have someone around to help you? How long was it before you were up and around on your own?

It depends on which type of surgery you have, open or lap. And how long your hospital stay is, mine was 5 days. I stayed at my Mom's for a week and a half cause I was pretty exhausted still. Good luck. Toni

surgery on thursday, home on friday to MIL's house, back to my own house with hubby on saturday night and on my own all day monday. didn't take any pain meds after saturday monring. i ran a fever and was sick as a dog on sunday night into monday, but was fine by tuesday and drove myself to do some errands.

I was in the hospital 5 days, given a pint of blood on the third day, I am anemic, stayed in a motel near the hospital as I was past the 50 limit. On the fifth day out, my surgeon took out the drain tube, and mom and I came home the next morning. I fixed my special liquid meals, mom fixed what she wanted to eat. She stayed for another week as dad had gone back to West Virginia. When he came down, I was so sick as my potassium level was critical, he took me back to the hospital and they left the next day. I was in the hospital for 7 days getting potassium put into me. We didn't know until much later that it was my chemo pills eating up my potassium. Mine was Laproscopic, they say after about 2-3 weeks you can go back to work on a lap procedure just no lifting. If you'res is open allow 6 weeks. Later Kathy

I had open RNY I was released from the hospital on my fourth day there. We had a four hour drive home and once home I was pretty much doing things on my own. Of course I couldn't do any heavy lifting or anything like that. A lot of your recovery time is going to depend on your own pain tolerance, how quickly your body heals, and the types of medications you are on.
