I'm Sick ! Help!
Surgery Aug. 22,06 doing great. Went back to work, worked a week and ended up in the hospital. Home two weeks. Smell of any kind makes me heave. Any smell. Drinking. Hard to take pills. Can take protein. (Not Pregnant) Want to feel so much better. Tired of feeling sick. I feel like I'm letting eveyone down. HELP!
Kim,
I went through the same thing. I went home and 24 hours was re-admitted as I couldn't keep anything down. I stayed in the hospital another six days and went home with a tube which had been surgically placed in my old stomach. Over a period of 8 weeks, I weaned myself off feeding only through the tube to eating small amounts. I have NEVER found a protein powder I can keep down. I have found some protein bars I could stomach but I get sick of them after a month or so.
2 years out, there are still some foods I cannot eat. Someone can open tuna in the house and I start puking. I just recently got to where I could eat eggs within the last six weeks. I throw up at least one time a week and often more. Sometimes my husband says he wishes I'd never had this surgery, but I was diagnosed with MS after and wouldn't be walking if I was still 383 pounds.
The only explanation my surgeon could give me was some folks get nauseous and throw up easier than others. I threw up every day and multiple times with every one of my pregnancies for the entire pregnancy and even into the delivery room.
I hope it gets better for you.
Kelly
Hi Kim, I am sorry you aren't feeling well. I'm 9 months out and I still can't stand the smell of tuna or eggs, nor can I handle water from a faucet. So when I go out, I carry my own spring water. I can only drink Deer Park water. So it's an ajustment period of trial and error. But I would check with your surgeon. I was that way for almost 4 months in and out of the hospital but I'm on chemo and it was eating up my potassium. Talk to your Dr. about this. There may just be a simple explanation or a stricture blocking everything. Don't delay on it. Want's it's taken care of, you'll start feeling better. My prayers are with you. Kathy
Hello Kim, I just wanted you to know that you are so NOT ALONE! I went through this also and have been readmitted twice since my surgery in July. (I wonder if I will be heading back a third time becasue I feel like I am getting the common cold) But can I share with you that smells REALLY get to you in the very begining, it is VERY hard to drink all of your fluids in the first month or so; I swear they should send us all home with an IV in place! When you are taking pills have you tried them crushed and put into something? I am not suppossed to to have applesauce, but I would put my pills in that & did fine.(it was organic, which is another thing, I could only handle organic, glutin free foods for awhile after the surgery)
A bit of advice to you that I ever knew until my hospital visit, the reason why you feel sick is because your potassium is so out of whack. So what I do for this is make mashed potato's(I know I am not supposed to have them, but it is better then ending up back in the hospital) make them really thick & then add Unjury to them, this way I am getting my protein and my pottassium at the same time. Also broccoli, rasins and bran flakes are a great source for potassium. I FINALLY feel great and have energy now; this is after always just laying in the bed with no energy and feeling very sick all the time. (even when I could get something in it would come back up, which was my vicious cycle of low potassium, so try those things or if not if you end up back in the hospital be prepared for some potassium bags.(just ask them to mix it w/ litacane(sp?) so it doesn't burn.
Sorry to hijack your post, but I want you know you are not alone in this, and only YOU know your body and what makes you feel halfway decent. Keep us posted on things! Kim
I'm sick too. I was able to start eating cottage cheese last Thursday to help get my protein in... Monday I started feeling poorly. Tuesday I was so dizzy and my stomach burned. My doctor said to stop taking my fluid pill, and also prescribed some ulcer medicine to treat/prevent them. He said the sutures could be aggravated.
Today I am still dizzy. The smell of any food grosses me out... I mean to say that its just outright repugnant. Last night I smelled chicken that my mom was cooking. When it came time to eat some, it tasted just like it smelled. That's all I could seem to taste and smell, maybe it was psychological. Eggs gross me out! Got any suggestions?
Kim,
Thanks for the info. I don't feel quite alone. What is unjury? Is this a protein powder? Ok I'm on puree how do you eat broccoli, and which bran flakes? I get so sick of what ever I'm drinking I switch out a lot. I feel like I'm letting my family down, because I spend my mornings spitting up. Thank you for taking the time to type.
Kim
