3 Days Post-op
Well I am on the other side!! WOOHOO!! My first night home was a little difficult. I had drinked the protein drink that I had picked out and it made me sick. Then I could not find a comfortable position to sleep in. Then I was thinking what have I done to myself. But then morning came and I decided to find a different drink and make the best of it. I think it is such a shock to your body to have all these changes at once. Most things you can do slowly but this is you go to sleep and wake up and it is done.
Congratulations Michael! What protein drinks have you tried? When I had surgery, Centennial's program only allowed the ABS or the Isopure drinks.... they're horrible!! I gagged each time. As for sleeping, a lot of people recommend sleeping in a recliner, which I couldn't do but I was able to sleep on my back ok. Try to stay busy....walking as much as possible if you can...it really does help a lot. Good luck with your journey!

Congrats Michael! I am glad to hear that you made it through surgery ok and have made it home. You will rest better at home than in the hospital. Yes, it is major shock to your body and it will take time to heal and adjust. Just rest and do not force or overdo anything. You have just underwent major surgery. I wish you all the best. You will feel better soon.

Hi Mike, congrads on having your surgery. My surgeon didn't force me to take any protein shakes for at least 2 weeks. I tried the Unjury that he recommended but found that my Chemo pills and the shakes don't agree. So I haven't taken any sense. I eat eggs, low fat cottage cheese, mild chedder cheese, white, boneless, skinless chicken, fish, shrimp, tuna, salmon, are all high in protein. Try the unflavored in your broth, water, sf jello, sf puddings, things like that, it may not make you sick as the flavor does. Good luck.
I will be in the Nashville area on Sept. 1-5 and hoping to meet up with Melinda and Toni. Maybe we'll also get a chance to meet. Another piece of advice, register with Medic Alert, 1-800-ID-ALERT. It's not just while the pouch is healing, but it's forever, the Dr.'s can not put the n/g tube down your nose as it is pushed down far and can rupture the pouch. I am registered with them, and having that on my information sheet, has saved my life several times since surgery. They can only put the scope down your throat. If the pouch gets damaged, your life will be in grave danger. So call them and get registered. It's $20 a year, you get an information sheet of all your medical problems, what medications you take and when, your allergies, ER contact, your surgeon, and PCP are on this sheet, you will also get a wallet card, and you can update constantly at no further charge, I also wear the stainless steel necklace, and it has on the back gastric bypass. That's about $30. I think every should get registered because of the n/g tube, but some think it's just while the stomach is healing, but it's for life. I've had to have that n/g tube put down my nose, and it's yards and yards of tubing that isn't always plastic. Think about it. Kathy
