I don't want to be like Star Jones!!!!!!
We all know the problems that Star had on the View about the lies she told about her weight loss .I don't work a job that is surrounded by public openion but lets just face it people do get very rude and ask all types of questions. SOOOOOO what in the hell do you tell them or do just do like Star and "LIE"
a lot of people say that they just eat less and exercise more when questioned about their weight loss. I work with a small group of people who are all very supportive so it has never been an issue for me. I have only told a select few of other "outside" individuals, some of the people who I do a water aerobics class with and of course my family. Otherwise, it has never came up. I don't know why some people feel the need to lie that they had surgery to help them with their weight loss. Personally, I feel ashamed that I had let myself get to the point where having such a dramatic surgery was my last resort.... which probaby most others feel and may cause some people to hesitate admitting to surgery. But any rate, just tell people what you want them to know. It's all up to you. Good luck!
I HATE telling people about my surgery ( except family and friends ) like recently I was babysitting for this women, and you know how people always keep things stocked for the sitter, I guess she noticed that I wasn't eating or drinking anything that she had there and kept offering it to me. So finally so she didn't think I was weird, or rude, I told her that well.... I recently had gastric bypass, and she was like ohhhhhh that thing to loose weight, and then acted really bizare about it!!! I'm not ashamed but, people are so judgement, and dont really understand!!!
Hi there,
You were right to just tell her the truth, but some people will always have that look of shock on their faces. I loved Star and still do, but I think that there is so much negative thoughts regarding this surgery that if some of the stars would lend their support it would be better understood.
You look so young, I am not sure how old you are, but maybe if you are younger, she just spoke before thinking.
Anyway, you are beautiful, and congradulations on surgery.
Take care,
Donna
Jo,
First of all, good luck on your upcoming surgery. Now to answer your question, I was upfront with everyone, my employer, my friends, & my family. Everyone knew about how I'd struggled with my weight and how it effected my health and wellbeing. When I told them I was pursuing the surgery, they were concerned and had a lot of quesitons but for the most part, they were very supportive. I know you've educated yourself, now you may have to educate everyone else in your life. If you are uncomfortable telling them that it's WLS, you can be evasive and say that there is a procedure that the doctors need to do to improve your health, which is not a lie. When they notice the weight loss, you can say it's a fortunate side effect of the surgery.
There will be those who challenge your decision to have this surgery but if you know it's the right treatment for you, hold your head high and defend yourself. It's not your problem that they are small minded and uneducated. I actually had one women that complemented me on my weight loss and asked how I'd done it. When I told her I had WLS she looked me square in the face and said "cheater". I was a little shocked but looked her in the eye and replied that if the doctor told her they needed to operate on her heart or liver to save her life, would that be cheating? She didn't have a response.
Good luck and let us know how things go.
Toni
