Topic: Hey! I'm kinda new..

Hey Everyone, Well, I know the title was a little weird so let me explain. I have been a member on this site for about 2 years. I haven't been on here in a long time and I didn't really use the message boards. Anyways, I am Jennifer and I am 18 years old. I was going to have the lap band when I was 16 but my insurance never approved. So, now that I am 18 I am pretty sure that everything will run smoother. I weight a whopping 330.. Yea I know, its sad. Anyways, I know I really need this surgery. I have had 2 knee surgeries and probably looking into more in the future. I have many health problems and its all getting worse! I have try every diet known to man since I was in 5th grade. I have always been overweight, and I am at the point that I am sick and tired of being this way. Now that I am old enough I want a change. I had myself talked out of this surgery for a while because I thought I could lose it on my own, which now I know I cannot. I have had every doctor I have seen wanting me to have this, so know that my age is not a problem I am going to forward. I know a lot about the surgery since I have looked into it for about 3 years now. I would love to get to know people on here because I know I will need the support. I would love to make some good and close friends. Sorry about this being long, I get to rambling..lol.. Well, I hope to hear from you guys soon! God Bless! Jennifer

Ok, first of all, 1 in 100 is an exaggeration, especially if your mom is reasonably young and healthy.  It all depends how overweight she is to begin with and what other problems she has going against her.  As long as she's not old and sick, she will probably be just fine, and live a lot longer in the end. In the surgery room, she'll be put to sleep, the surgery will take a couple of hours, and then she will be taken out of the operating room and slowly woken up.  If she's feeling well enough, she'll get out of bed a few hours later and try to walk around a little bit.  Is her surgery going to be performed open (with a big cut) or laparascopic (with a few tiny incisions)? If it is laparascopic, she'll be up and moving a lot quicker and recover more quickly too.  That will also tell how long she'll be in the hospital. Over the next couple of days in the hospital she'll work on walking around more and she'll be on pain meds. When she comes home, she'll have medicine to take when she needs it too and she'll still be sore but trying to move around. Within a couple of weeks things should get very close to normal, except for her eating patterns. She'll have a series of diets after the surgery to slowly reintroduce her stomach to foods, and some might make her sick, as I'm sure you know. Over time, she'll figure out what she can and can't eat and how much she can eat. She'll need to make sure she stays hydrated too. Don't be worried about anything, and if you are, tell your mom about it. I'm sure she's just as worried about losing you as you are about losing her, and the chances are that that won't happen. What's not normal that could happen? There's always the possibility of developing an infection after the surgery. My mom did after she had it and had to go back to the hospital for two more days but then she was perfectly fine. If that happens, your mom will realize something doesn't feel right or that she is getting sick and will call the doctor to help get better. If there's anything else you want to know, just ask. I can't stress enough how important it is to talk about it with your mom and be supportive of her. I wish I knew more when my mom had hers done because I was scared and felt lonely about it too, and I ended up taking it out on her by thinking that it was stupid and she shouldn't do it and that she was taking the easy way out because I didn't understand. She's doing something courageous so that she can be here longer to take care of you and live her life to the fullest. Be there for her.

Topic: RE: 19 & new to this... planning on having RNY but not sure... Thinking I need some support...
The decision is up to you. I'm 22 and had surgery 5 years ago. My doctor was very for me having the lap band, however I knew it wasn't something that was going to work for me. I did research on both surgeries and weighed the pros and cons of each surgery. Ultimately, the way I decided was writing down my problem foods. Since fat/sugar was more of an issue I went with the RNY. I'm currently away at college. Food is harder to find since most of the food is very unhealthy. I brought a fridge with me and make sure I have food that I can eat. Also, college food tends just to be gross anyway so most people have some of their own food. In terms of drinking, I would wait a year before. Most doctors recommend waiting this amount of time. Most people do get drunk off less alcohol since it goes into your body faster so be careful. I've also had  two plastic surgeries since and I'm very open if you have any questions you can also email me at [email protected]. Stacey
