I just posted this in my intro thread! lol-Same thing- when I was 16 I did ALL the pre op stuff, went though it all and then found out WAY LATE that my insurence had an exclusion for Lap Band so here I am 18 and am plannign to have RNY because I know they cover it! Hopefully I will have some good news to post as well! I'd love to chat sometime about our similiar experiences. My AIM is Blacklaceonivory if you or anyone on here for that matter ever wants to chat! feel free to IM me- just tell me your from OH!
Hey guys! I'm Robin- 18 from NY. So basicly this is my second time persuing WLS- its a very long story (You can read my page for more info if you want) but when I was 16 i was really close to having the Lap Band, did all the pre surgery stuff and then way late in the process found out that my insurence didn't cover it, and because of my age my surgeon wouldn't do RNY. So Here I am 2 years later, 18 and now i qualify for RNY. Im starting all over and really hope to get things moving soon. I have to update a few things with my insurence this week and once that clears im making a new consult Apt with my surgeon. Im thinking of shopping around a bit for a surgeon so there are a few I may go to consults on. Now I actually have the option of searching around because i'm 18. So just wanted to say i big old HI to everyone!!I'd love to chat with anyone whos in the same boat as me, or who has had the surgery, what ever. Always great to have people who know what your going through!
I was 18 when I decided I wanted weight loss surgery. Our situations are different... when I asked my parents about the surgery - I wasn't just asking for permission, I was asking for the $$$... unfortunately my insurance company would not allow me to have the DS so I needed a LOT of $$$. Luckily, my parents were willing to help me and I've since had my surgery. I guess our situations differ also because my parents aren't triatheletes, rather they have struggled with weight issues throughout their lives - AND my mom had RNY 2 years before... So even though our situations are very different I can say this... be honest. Tell them how concerned you are with health risks due to your weight, tell them how you've tried to lose weight in the past, tell them how willing you are to follow post-op instructions... present your "case" to them with all of the info in mind. They will surely have questions so you NEED to have answers. Make sure you know what you're asking for. In my case, my parents were convinced by my knowledge of what I was getting myself into.
I would definitely find a doc. Even if he/she's not the "one", find a surgeon to discuss your options with. Again, this will give you information to present to your parents, giving them comfort and understanding of your seriousness about wanting this. GOOD LUCK to you!!
