Topic: RE: PLEASE HELP ME
There are some surgery centers that allow people under the age of 18 to be patients, and get surgery. Though I had to wait until I was 18. I started the process when I was 17 just so I could get surgery when I turned 18. I wish you the best of luck!

I had surgery at the age of 17 with Lucile Packard Children Hospital, they are only a few years into doing this surgery for teens, i was number 9 to get it done with them. Cincinnati has been doing it so much longer, their program is the one Lucile Packard is sorta mimicing.

Dear sarah,
Some of our best patients have come to us from Indiana! So, we would be happy to see you in Cincinnati
. We offer adolescents the option of gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and banding (but for banding 18 yo+). You can schedule an appt by calling toll free 800-344-2462, ext 64453 or directly at 513-636-4453. Or email our program coordinator at [email protected].
Alternatively, if you are interested in banding you may want to consider options in Chicago as well.
Warmest regards,
Tom Inge, MD

Topic: RE: My 9-year old son
Hi Cathy,
There certainly are good multidisciplinary weight managment programs out there for kids, but they can be hard to find!
Depending on the part of the country you live in, I can make suggestions.
Most programs will not likely consider surgical options for a child as young as 9 but there are very real issues at this stage that need to be considered. A 9 yo for instance needs to take advantage of the best non-surgical interventions available, and have results documented accurately. Often at age 9 we see success without surgery. But if down the road he is still extremely overweight, payors will look for documentation of prior attempts and their succcess or failure before escalating treatment to the next level.
We are in the process of updating surgical guidelines for adolescents now, but some very good recommendations can be found on our website (www.cchmc.org/weight) or at www.guidelines.gov.
Many thanks for your query.![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/smile.gif)

Topic: RE: VSG is another choice......
Dear Bless,
You bring up a very good topic. As yet there are not published outcomes data for teens and the VSG but I agree with you that this is an option that we should look at very carefully. Hopefully there will be some information available soon that pertains to adolescents regarding this operation. We have a number of tools now to combat the pediatric obesity problem. We just need to see what works best, and what is best tolerated. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Topic: My 9-year old son
It's hard to watch the decline of a healthy weight for my 9-year old son. However, I'm finding myself in this predicament.
Both dad and I are obese...dad was okay until recently when he started taking anti-depressants. This caused him to gain at least 100 pounds within about 2 years. He was medically discharged from the military because of his health (I don't know a lot of specifics, as we're divorced).
I've struggled with obesity my entire life. I had VBG back in 1998, and just recently revised to lap-band, as the VBG failed.
I really want my son to avoid this battle...and I talk to him openly about it, but given his age, he's not able to go to the gym with me and he's never been interested in sports (he's my artist/cook)
Are there programs for a child as young as my son? Does BMI apply to children as well? I would be open to any suggestions, as I really want to help guide him before things get out of control.
Thank you,
Cathy
Topic: VSG is another choice......
This message is for young people who are considering WLS .....there is the lapband, the RNY and now the VSG.... have your folks check out the VSG....its a very good option for young people since it is more permanent than the Lapband and doesnt involve the re routing of the intestines. I have had one and it is working fantastically for me, I have a teen son who if we dont get a handle on his weight will also be having this surgery. I know they have a WLS program at Stanford for Teens now, that is where I got my surgery. For awhile it was considered a surgery that they didnt have enough data on but more and more insurance companies are covering it now.....I have BlueCross and they covered it completely.
There are other choices ......

Topic: RE: Young and Restless
you are not alone. i am 18 and just had my surgery. Still never had any boys
that are intrested in me. but the way i look at the situation is. dont stress out about
boys not being interested in you. just allow yourself to enjoy this journey and when
the time is right that mr right will show up. and besides at our age we still have time.
