THat is really awesome! My Mom was always afraid to pass on her fat-ness too. She always tried to help me as I was growing up. 2 years ago she lost 100 lbs using Medifast and is now a health coach and is doing absolutely amazing. She is truly my inspiration. She is also very supportive of me and my choice to have vsg. Moms are the best! You did your daughter a great service in helping her get this under control at a young age. You rock!

Hey Tim,

You hit the nail on the head!  My biggest fear was my own daughter would also be fat -- I was fat, will I pass it on to my children?!  Yup, my daughter WAS fat, was teased, and was miserable.  I was not mean to her, did not restrict food, but tried to help her.

My daughter just turned 20, I am a very PROUD mother of a kid who BEAT FAT, and is very active now, mainly because of BREAKFAST and MILD exercise (walking to school).

Kate, my daughter, was 286 pounds in the first year of High School.  She wanted a change, so we both worked together to help her.  By the end of tenth grade, she was 175 pounds at 5' 10" -- pretty normal weight!  She is now in college getting her AA in Applied Science, and thinking about a Four Year Degree.

Being a Fat Kid isn't the worst thing in life - believe it or not!  You can be ACTIVE, just get out there, even if it is only walking a few miles a day.  I swam 6 days a week as a kid -- guess what I do as an adult???  I swim 5 days a week - and I will always fighting obesity.

Hang in there, and remember, be PROUD of who you are!

Topic: RE: Daughter
Hey Mom,

I just posted a story about my daughter - similar size, but she lost her weight NON-surgically.  I have been keeping food journals since I was TEN, as I was a fat child, even though I was an ACTIVE child.  I say this, as it may help your daughter.  Kate (my girl) refused to do a journal, so I had to come up with something easier.

My daughter was 286 pounds at 5' 10, when I made her a deal -- drink a Meal Replacement Shake for BREAKFAST - she never had breakfast on a regular basis -- and I would drive her to school in the morning.  She would then walk three miles FROM school as her main exercise.

By the end of her Sophomore Year (we started in her Freshman Year), she dropped ONE HUNDRED POUNDS!  No crazy diets, just making sure she actually had breakfast - nutritionally SOUND (not just Sugar Puffs Cereal), and moderate exercise five days a week.

My daughter just turned 20 in August, still drinks a Meal Replacement Shake for breakfast - EVERY MORNING - and walks to & from the bus that takes her to school - about 3/4 mile from our house, and she is STILL keeping her weight off!

Having a well balanced diet is one factor -- having breakfast not only will put your daughter in a better mood in the morning, but will keep her body FUELED, so she may be less likely to have unhealthy snacks.  My daughter RARELY drinks any soda - diet or not - and LOVES water.  This is also a very important key -- liquid calories.  If you are ENCOURAGING, she will be more likely to be able to make changes fr her good.  My own mother was encouraging, and even though I grew up obese, I was always (and still am) active, and aware of what I eat.

My daughter's photo is in my blog - if you want to see what she looks like.  She has kept all the weight off, and is very happy.  I wish you & your daughter much success -- write me privately, if you would like to share thoughts!!!

Topic: How my Daughter lost over 100 pounds WITHOUT Surgery
My greatest fear of having children was passing on my "fat-ness".  When my daughter was getting into Junior High, she really started gaining weight, so I was being proactive in helping her to stay focused on a solid nutrition based diet (not just caloric restrictive) and started getting her active.

We moved to a new State in her Freshman year of High School, she was up to 286 pounds at 5' 10" -- so she wasn't really getting the most bang for her nutritional buck - so I offered her a deal: Drink a Meal Replacement Shake on her way to school, and I will drive her to school.  She would have to walk the three miles home, but not having to take the bus was a good deal for her!

Every morning, I would help her wake up - she isn't a morning person - and I would make her a Meal Replacement Shake & warm the truck for our ride.  Skipping BREAKFAST is the WORST thing a child can do - especially if that child already has weight issues!  I, myself, still have to be diligent & have a Meal Replacement Shake for breakfast - but I do it EVERY DAY!  My daughter started losing weight, and by end of Sophomore year, she was a NORMAL WEIGHT!

My daughter is now going to college, still at home, still drinking a Meal Replacement Shake EVERY DAY (I saw her status on Facebook, smiled "I love having Meal Replacement Shakes, it makes it feel like Fall again!").  My daughter is about 175 pounds, standing 5' 10", so she is on the high end of the BMI - her photo is in my blog - please look at it & tell me -- does she look fat to you???

Go to iLikeChike.com - try their Travel Pack - $6.95 -- tell them Brenda from OH told you about their product if you call 877-974-2537 - they MAY send you the Travel Pack for FREE!  This is what my Kate drinks!!!!  She is walking proof you don't need surgery to lose weight and do it HEALTHY!!!

Hey(: I'm Ashley. I just had the VSG a week ago.. and i turned 16 this monday. lol. I know what you mean.. I have all of that throughout my family too. Its terrible. (Ironically, I did  the plussize modeling thing too.. xD) But yeah, it definatley would help you become healthier.

Although, most insurance companies require you to be 40bmi, or 35+ with comorbidies (diabetes, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, sleep apnea, anything obesity related..) .. I'm not too sure about self-pay. But its somthing you could look into.. Have you mentioned it to your mom? Id suggest you do that if you havent already. maybe she could ask the surgeon that did her wls, his opinion? maybe set up a consultation for you, if he would consider operating on a minor.

Good luck! message me ify ou ever need anything or have any questions. (:

My name is Lexii and I am 17 years old and currentl weigh 207 pounds at 5'7.5" . My mother recently has had weight loss surger and I am seriously considering it. I've tried all sorts of diets and nothing has worked, I'm at a loss. I have diabetes, heart disease, thyroid disease ,stroke and cancer throughout my family, and I do not want to end up dying young. I have done some plus size modeling  which is the only thing holding me back because I love doing that, but I know that I could be much healthier if I lost weight. I just don't know w what to do , is weight loss surgery to extreme because I'm just over the 30 BMI?? (31.7) UGH!

Topic: Wellspring Theraputic Weightloss camp
Just wanted to let all the parents of obese/overweight kids that the wellspring camp has been a fabulous blessing for my family. I had the RNY 12/2009 and lost 125 pounds which only made my 12 year old very angry. She was 50 pounds overweight and very sad hating herslef all the time. After spending two summers at this wellspring camp she is a new happy little girl. She has lost 47 pounds and loves herself.
The very unfortunate part is that it is very very expensive. But WORTH every thousand we spent.

Just another resource if you are able for your child.

Ashley, I just was wondering if you had a date set and what was happening for you? Being a teen is hard enough without having to go through all this. Anyway, I know it may seem like there are not many people out there responding so I wanted to respond to you. Even if there are a lot of old folks like myself...well we all had to get here after being a teen. I remember being alone as a teen and people used to say they were the best years of your life...thank goodness they turned out wrong and the best was yet to come. Congratulations on getting a new start and being on your way to a new and healthier you. If I can help you, please write and please don't feel alone...funny thing about feeling alone is there's a whole lot of people feeling alone and if they could feel alone together..well then they wouldn't be alone...all the best to you and I hope for all your dreams to come true! hey(: i'm 15. i actually just got my surgery date about a week ago. my surgerys on the 19th. i turn 16 on the 22nd. haha. i'm having the VSG.

I know what you mean.. theres not many people on here that are younger and having any type of weight loss surgery.. but i've met a few that are.

not too sure about college and wls.. other than make sure you give yourslef enough recovery time. and get yourself into a good pattern with preop/postop diets and try to stick to them.. i'm on my preop diet now. its not as hard for me as some people have made it seem. hopefully it wont be for you, either.

good luck! i hpoe you get a date soon and i wish you the best. (: feel free to pm me if you want some time.
