Hi LovieMadison,

You might try contacting Dr. Mike Helmrath at UNC. He is the closest pediatric bariatric surgeon that I am aware of. I know he recently relocated from Houston to UNC so will be establishing an adolescent program there, and really does take care of all the teen issues. If you need contact information, I am happy to provide it.

Warmest regards,

Tom Inge

Hi Karina,
I like the fact that you are asking alot of questions, and not entering into the weight loss surgery topic casually!

Since you are in Indiana, you might also consider coming with your mom or dad to an information session at our hospital. Either I or one of the other docs who work with us here at the Surgical Weight Loss Program for Teens hosts these sessions monthly. Visit our site for details (www.cchmc.org/weight).

Warmest regards,

Tom Inge, MD

okay hun Im 20 years old i had gastric bypas when i was 19 in july i weighed 272 im 5 months out and i weigh 193 lbs. ...... im ot going to sugar coat this for you because this is not a quick fix surgery so it shoulnt be treated like it..  IF you have tried numerous thing to lose weight i think this surgery is your best bet..it changed my life for the best deffinatly...but up until october i serously wanted and thought i was going to die...i had alot of post op problems had to go in for an endoscopy to stretch my stomach opening and had 5 iv treatments due to dehydration...you will feel depressed without food to medicate you for a while...you have to get over it..now with all that is said and done i think you need to see a pschiatrist before you do all this..if insurance is the way your gonna go then itll be required to see one first..if depression is what keeps you overeight than you might want to try anti depressants i have had friends who lost alot of weight after they gt help with theyre depression. this decision must and can only come from you...if your honestly ready to take this step and you think it is your only and last option then you know what your decision is....good luck and really do some homework before considering this..

Thank you for your help. My mothers also has a profile on here. She got me interested in it. We had the plan of after the surgery when she eats the 3 ounces that she is aloud i will also eat with her. Also we will excerise together. I know this is a way to bond with her. She had knee surgery about 1 year ago and it was also hard. I guess any surgery that my mother has will bother me for awhile. But thank you so much for your help. Merry Christmas to you and your family. God bless you all.

Hi Amanda, Well I am old enough to be your grandmother.  I weighed 254 pounds in April.  I had gastric bypass in India.  Now I weigh 162 pounds and still losing.  My goal is 125 which I think I can make by next April.  I am off of ten prescription medicines and feel very good. I have an overweight grandson who is 240 pounds and is only 14.  We are hoping to find a surgeon to take him when he turns 16.   I cannot tell you what to do.  Do you have insurance?  If so, they will make you follow a doctor's diet and exercise for many months before they might consider you for surgery.  If you don't have insurance, you will have to save a lot of money up for the surgery.  Surgery should absolutely be your LAST option.  Have you tried Weigh****chers or another support group?  Have you journaled every bite that goes into your mouth?  Have you exercised regularly?  These are all questions you will have to answer before your surgery.    If you have tried all of these things and are honestly unable to lose the weight, then you should check it out. It saved my life.  I am hoping it will save my grandson's.
This too will pass, like a kidney stone but it will pass!

Post Date: 12/11/07 8:57 am   DS/BPD, RNY, LAPBANDERS, VGB -  WHATEVER YOUR SURGERY OF CHOICE IS, YOU ARE ALL WELCOMED TO ATTEND OUR SUPPORT MEETINGS HERE IN CAMBRIDGE, K/W !!!!!!!   Just wanted to remind those in the Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo and Surroundng Areas that our  Obesity Help Support Meeting is next Sunday, one week from today, on, Sunday December 16th 2007 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm in my home for the month of December ONLY.   We will start the New Year (2008) at Zehers on Hwy. 97 & Hwy 8. on Franklin Road.  I will be posting more on OUR NEW LOCATION, come the end of December 2007. Now, back to our Sunday December 16th 2007 meeting.  All our welcome.  For thoses of you who wish to bring something small and healthy to our little Xmas luncheon/snack.  Thank you, as it cuts down on the personal expenses for me and we all really do appreciate the variety of good healthy choices that are brought to our meetings. Our topics will be following up with Christine & Lydia as they are our newbies, recovering from their DS surgery.  To answer any of their questions and/or concerns, hopefully, they will feel well enough to attend our Xmas Meeting. We have a couple of new Members who will be attending their first meeting, looking for information and Support on some surgery choices, and results.  Some require help with OCC papers and doctors letters, testing.  Just plain support for their new journey that lies ahead of them. Plus TIPS ON GETTING THROUGH THE HOLIDAY SEASON !!!!!!!!!! If you all could be kind enough to e-mail me and let me know whether or not you will be attending, that would be terrific. I will post this again, as a reminder several times during the week. Looking forward to seeing you all again for our last meeting of 2007  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sincerely, Sharon Moody Sharon
