Topic: I'm 17 and I have my consultation for the lap band on wednesday.
I know that the questions I'm going to ask are meant for my doctor, but I'm just too anxious to wait.
Ok so for those of you that have had the Lap Band can you tell me how much weight you lost in about a week? I read somewhere that it was 1-2 pounds, but I was thinking that was just regular weight loss without the exercising. 1-2 pounds is just too small of a weight loss for me. I was thinking 5 pounds a week. I really would like to have my first perfect summer before college. How did you feel after the surgery? I had my Gallbladder removed and after I barely felt any pain, but these are two different surgeries. Thanks for your time

Hello Kylie, I watched your story on gastric bypass journey. During The video you said that you got headaches before the surgery. Also the condition that you had could cause eye problems. Do you have what is called pseudo tumor cerebrii. This cause headaches and posiable blindness too. It usually affects over weight woman and young girls. My daughter is 15 and she has this. Thank you, Cathy

WOW. The written word is an amazing thing. It can have a different tone for everyone that reads it. I just ask you to reread my post when you are in a different frame of mind. I do not jump at the chance to scold anyone about anything.
There is not one means to an end that is one size fits all. On that I think we agree.

You are right, you don't know me, and obviously you don't understand what I said in my original post. You seem to want to jump at the chance to scold me for trying to give my opinion about putting a child through more of a emotional upheaval with weight loss surgery.
Through my own experiences, I have met allot of people who eat as a means to comfort themselves. Teens and pre teens are at one of the most emotional points in their lives. My message is to not use surgery as a means to solve the problem without giving HONEST attempts to get healthy. I would say the same thing if my child wanted breast implants. I would have to tell her that there are risks and that the implants may give her confidence at the beginning, but over time, they won't solve all her issues with her self esteem.
Surgery should not be looked at as a magic spell that will solve everything, it is far from that. Weight gain does occur afterwards, if you don't live a healthy lifestyle. That needs to be understood.About half of the people I know that underwent WLS, have regained substantial amounts of weight back.Exhausting all natural methods is crucial, someone may find that simply changing eating habits is enough.Yes, genetically people are obese, but what we are seeing now with the amount of people obese is a epidemic caused by poor nutrition and lack of activity.
So, I ask that you relax a little and take time to get the facts before you come here and try to belittle or demean me.I didn't realize you were an authority on the subject anyway.
Topic: RE: 19 Years old...had RNY March 7th
Hi Lyndsey!
That is a crazy story. Wow. It is great that you could eventually get approved and now you're on your way to success. I had RNY when I was 19 too (I'm 21 now), though I got approved by insurance on my first try. If you're looking for people closer to your age, and a board that moves a lot faster, you should check out the Weight Loss Surgery in Your 20's board through obesity help. Here is a link http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/wls_in_your_20s/ I hang out there a lot and there are plenty of really cool people there to support you and answer questions should you have any - AND it is a great place to offer your insight and support to others. I hope you decide to check it out!

Being overweight in school is hard but you should not let people control your emotions like that. I'm a senior in high school and weight 250lbs. I still go out and have fun though. I know sometimes you look around and think "are they laughing at me?" Honey, we all do that but 99 times out of 100 they are not.
Topic: RE: Young and scared
Your feelings are normal. This is a big deal, you would be foolish not to be a little overwhelmed. It is really hard being a younger post-op for exactly the reason you listed - there just aren't a lot of us and there are not a lot of places to go for support. I just discovered this board, I usually hang out on the Weight Loss Surgery in Your 20's board because it is for people my age (I had RNY when I was 19 - now I'm 21), it moves faster than this board and I feel most at home there. I know you're not 20 yet, but really the 20's board is the closest thing for post-op teens. If you would feel comfortable there you should come on over. I promise, no one is going to kick you out because you're only 17. I think you'll find everyone there very supportive and helpful. I hope to see you over there!

Hey Emily! If you're looking for people close to your age you should check out the Weight Loss Surgery in Your 20's board, here is a link http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/wls_in_your_20s/
I had my surgery when I was 19 too, I'm 21 now. I know you're not 20 yet, but the folks on the 20's board are very close to our age and are really helpful. You'll also find plenty of lap banders there too, and the board in general moves faster than this one, without all the extra drama of the main board. I hope your surgery went well and I hope to see you on the 20's board when you get a chance!

I don't know you or your child so I would never presume to know what is right for either one of you.
I do know that I could lose weight but would gain it back - plus more - over time, eating and doing the same activity. It is as if my body adapted and found a way to regain. The same goes for my teenaged daughter. Not all weight problems are emotional or habit related. Some are genetic.
I wish you and your child the best of luck and continued success. I also hope you do not become discouraged or blame her if the sucess is not long term.
At the same time I ask that you not demean or belittle those that have found success with WLS - as you have yourself - regargless (sp?) of their age.
