Topic: RE: Don't know where to begin.....

Wow, I am so sorry noone has responded to your thread in almost a month, but I rarely come on this board, so I thought I would stop by. When I was 9 years old I actually weighed more than your son.  I was 190 pounds and by the age of 12 I was 275, and by 13 I was 310 and just went up and up until I eventually hit 458 which I am at right now, and is my highest and I am currently 19.  I played basball from the age of 4-12, I played football all through middle school and I wrestled through middle school and high school, what I have to say to you is physical activity is good, but isn't the main necessity.  You, as a parent, need to limit and have a set schedule when your child eats, and what he eats.  If he keeps crying, tuff, if he wants a certain treat, keep it in moderation.  Don't make it an everyday thing.  I am totally not bashing your parenting skills in anyway, and yes I am still a child myself, but I am old enough to see what my parents did to make me 458 pounds at the age of 19. Personally I didn't realizie how big and uncomfortable that I was with myself until I was 13, and I had already weighed 310 pounds at that point.  Going through your life as an extremely obese teenager is not fun, and if you get to that certain point it is so hard to reverse it! All I am saying to you is, that you can stop this!  He doesn't even have to start of by completely going to healthy foods.  Keep a journal of what he eats on a daily basis, start reducing his portion sizes.  After reducing his portion sizes, start giving those foods to him in moderation (maybe just as a treat).  When dinner time comes around make fo low in calories and low in fat.  If he doesn't want to eat it, then that is on him.  I would personally send him to bed hungry, or he would have to eat what I made him.  75% of the time they will eat what you make.  He is only 9, he doesnt have a car or the money to go buy mcdonalds, you buy it for him and that has to stop.  If he is able to go into the kitchen and make his own foods, have you considering putting a lock around the fridge?  Or around the cabinets?   There is alot of things that you can do to reverse this.  I just don't want anyone to ever end up in my shoes, and I tell my little 8 year old sister that everyday.  I was the first born of my parents and the only super obese one out of my siblings, and I blame it on my parents being young when they had me, and had no money other than to buy me fast food everyday.  I am sorry that this is so long, and I will stop right now.  But just try to make a change, and I hope that it will work out for the better.

I am just amazed how disciplined some of you are.  Keeping stuff out of the house, no TV, etc.  The hard part of keeping all bad stuff out of the house is that my daughter (17) is not overweight  (yet) and she likes to have snacks for school and work.  No sugar snacks, but cheeze nips, etc.  I try to keep up on how much we have and if they are disappearing.  I hate having to play food police with my son.  My mom used to do it to me all the time so I had to be extra discreet so she wouldn't find out.  I always make sure I have fruit and yogurt and light stuff too for him to eat, but he just doesn't seem to ever get satisfied.  I know I have a long road ahead of me and I hope that things will get better.

Hi Lauren, Jennifer has the right idea in suggesting to carry food with you. If you have the right food around, you're more likely to succeed!  Good sources of protein that would be easy to carry (especially if you take an insulated lunch bag) include: hard boiled egg turkey slices part skim mozzarella string cheese nonfat/lowfat cottage cheese nonfat/lowfat yogurt (Greek yogurt like the Fage brand or Trader Joe's brand is~2x the protein as regular yogurts) turkey jerkey or salmon jerkey nuts are an ok source of protein but pack alot of calories (200 calories to get ~7g protein vs 40 calories to get the same protein from 1oz of turkey slices) Hope that helps!!

I worry about my kids too. My daughter is 12 and overweight. It is a complex problem. If you focus to much on it her self esteem will suffer. I have opted to do baby steps.

I don't bring in bad food in the house -
healthy snacks after school (yogurt, fruit)
healthy meals - basically what I have
Treats are skinny cows ice cream, sf Popsicles, sf lifesaver and no more than one treat a day. Soda is a treat.

I think they have to have some good things once in a while so they don't feel deprived but I try my best to make them a good alternative.

After school they have homework, read for 20 minutes and then they can choose 20 minutes on the treadmill or go for a walk, bike ride etc. This is a must before any TV, video game or computer is turned on. Actually a new rule in my house is no TV until dark. Weekends TV is off between 10-5 unless it's a really yucky day outside.

I have slowly introduced this regiment adding things and taking foods out over the course of a year. We are still learning. My goal is to keep them at the weight they are and let them grow into it.

Best of luck to all. It's heart breaking to watch your kids go through this.

I think Pacific Care is just stalling trying to see if I will fight for the surgery. I will until she gets it. Our Dr Higa has done several young patients with great success.

Realistically you should be losing about 2lbs a week.  I was banded in december and I have already lost 28lbs in 8 weeks.  My doctor has told me that I am doing good and that if I lose any quicker I could be looking at alot of loose skin.  You really should not care how much you have lost in a short amount of time but more that you are getting to your goal and the weight is coming off.  A lot of what you might not know is that the lap-band is just a tool, not a complete fix.  You will lose more weight the more you use your band wisely and make good choices.  You will also possibly gain weight if you dont.  As for the pain after surgery...I had my gallbladder out and I found the LapBand only slightly more painful.  I was out of bed comfortably within 3-4days and back to work in 5 days.  The only problem that you may notice is that your port area tends to stay sore for upwards of a month but it is not unbearable (atleast for me).  Any more questions feel free to pm me directly.  I will do my best to help you out.  You also might find going to the LapBand forum helpful too. http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/LapBand/a,messageboard/board_id,5359/

HI HOLLY, YES IT WILL BE HARD BUT WHEN SHE IS HUNGRY ENOUGH SHE WILL EAT!  MY DAUGHTER IS THE SAME WAY AND SHE IS 9 YRS OLD.  IT BREAKS MY HEART NOT TO ALWAYS GIVE HER WHAT I WANT AND I AM A SINGLE MOM.  YOU CAN DO IT HOLLY.  SOMETIMES WITH THAT AGE YOU CAN FIND WAYS TO DECORATE THE FOOD, LOL SOUNDS GOOFY BUT IT WORKS GOOD LUCK! Kylie, My daughter is 15. She is on Diamox for psuedo. Her last spinal tap was a yr ago. She is over weight too. She also has some other health issues and dealing emotional problems from being sexual assulted too. I have asked her about what she knows about  wls but I realy don't  think she is mature enough at this point in her life with everything that she has been through. Right now she is in counsling. When she is emotional ready we will cross that bridge when we get there. As for my oldest daughter (20yrs old) and I we are in the process to get approved for wls (rny).  Thank You for listening.
