Topic: RE: I need ideas to get my 13-yr-old exercising
I know it sounds easier than done but its true. We have been working with a Children's Hospital with both of my children to help get the whole family healthier. My 14 1/2 year old has taken up running on her own. She runs between 1 -2 miles a day and in two months she has lost 4 inches off her waist. My son on the other hand is also a game lover and doesn't want to get moving. He however is enjoying golf ( in our front yard) We live in a big field on 52 acres. Anything the doctors says to get him out from in front of the TV or a game. Even if we clean up the yard, walk to dog, play frisbee, throw the ball, what ever. Because he has problem with his feet you may want to get you both a bike. Or a stationary one. Good Luck. Helping our kids is so important. They are the best thing we will ever do so we can't give up. We owe them the best in health.

Topic: Teen Weight Loss Surgery Book/ Obesity
Hey everyone, Wow it has been such a long time since I posted here. Anyways some of you may remember me I was 16 and 300lbs when I got the lap band. Im now 18 and 180lbs!!! yay for me :} anyways I am co-authoring a book with people at Columbia Childrens Hospital. The co-author is actually my nutritionist(not the typical 1's were all use to ). This book is going to be HUGE not only is it telling my story(with build in humor) but it has commentary from bariatric surgeon, nutriniest, psychologists and primary doctors. I am also going to be including a section on recipies(all pretested by me and others) and tid bits of info. This is the first of its kind because it's an acutal fellow teen writing this book versus a doctor. As the book gains populatiry (OH recently did an interview with me regarding my life and the book, look for me in the magazine) I decided to create a site on the OH website. Please feel free to message me!! My OH name is Teen_Obesity_Writers-Cortney and the Co-Author is Teen_Obesity_Writers-Janet friend request us!!

Topic: RE: DOES ANYONE???????

Tina,
I am doing great with my surgery. I have lost 85lbs since November. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I graduated last year, so I am now in my freshman year of college. I have been looking into having gastric bypass since I was 16, but I had to wait until i was 18 because of my insurance. If you have any questions feel free to message me anytime, and you can read my blog, but I am not sure how much that would help.
Hope you have a wonderful day!!

Hi Jennifer, Congratulations on your surgery!  How are you doing?  Are you still in high School?  My son is 18 and my heart breaks for him because of his weight.  Neither he nor I have mentioned surgery (I've had gastric bypass), but I want to be prepared in case he does bring it up.  In my opinion, I give you lots of credit for taking control and for being so brave!  Any details that you'd like to share would be appreciated.   Good luck!

My son loves Gameboy and computer games.  I need ideas that will get him exercising.  I have heard of something that requires exercise in order to run a tv or game.  But I don't know what it would be called or where to find it.  Please let me know if you have any information or ideas. My son has had surgeries on both feet in the past and he may need surgery again soon.  He can't walk or hike long distances without having foot pain because of this problem. Thank you in advance for all ideas and suggestions.

Topic: RE: Giving up hope
I have to say that I AM Bi-polar, and I don't act like that with my kids. I know that you are angry with your mom, and I'm sure that you have your reasons, but accusing her of a serious mental illness is not the answer. She may have a mental health issue, but saying something like that will just offend some people (besides, people with bi-polar do NOT have split personalities).  I did not see the show, but I do have an over-weight child of my own and I am waiting for WLS myself.  I think that trying to keep a positive attitude is the most important thing here. Right now it sounds like you are very worried about what other people are saying/thinking about you. PLEASE, don't let that affect you. I'm sure that you have many positive qualities, we all do. Try to focus on those and also build a support group around you. Be with people that are good to you and supportive. Doesn't sound like you need ANYMORE negativity in your life. I hope that you are able to find the solution. In the meantime, eat healthy, try to exercise and stay positive. You are the only one that has to be happy with what you see in the mirror.

I recently have Lap RNY. I had to go through all the testing too. It gives the doctor a better idea of everything. Best Wishes. ♥ Tiffany
