Topic: RE: Bone Scan

I believe all teens that have surgery have to have a bone scan done before surgery to make sure that your skeleton is fully mature. I know I did, and everyone I know has had one done too.

Hey everyone. I am a 17 year old looking to have gastric bypass. My insurance does not discriminate against age, but i did find something rather odd. Has any other teens that had WLS had to have a Bone Scan?

Topic: Frustrated with my daughter's pediatrician
My daughter will be 5 years old next month and weighs 83 lbs. She is 46 inches tall, and is obviously a thick child. Her abdomen is so misshapen, I worry that there is something more to the story. Her pediatrician says she is simply overweight, and that we need to maintain her current weight and allow her to grow into it. She is a fraternal twin, and outweighs her twin sister by 30 pounds. They were born 6 weeks early, and she was 4 lbs, 14 oz. at birth. Currently, she looks 7 months pregnant. Honestly. She looks pregnant.

When she was about 10 months old, we took her to the ER for a suspected bowel obstruction. They told us she has a slow ileus( or ileum, not sure which is the correct term). She suffered from chronic constipation as an infant, and also had an umbilical hernia.

I guess my question is, would her misshapen abdomen be indicative of anything? I am wondering if she might have a metabolic disorder, and am having her bloodwork done, but her tummy really scares me.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Hi cathy,

I just read on another message from this board that someone else getting the surgery below 18 proved her full growth with x-rays. I have no Idea how but it's something worth asking your daughter about

Hello, I just had my RNY last tuesday and honestly it's not painful... I havent even been on pain meds for a few days. The lap band is a good choice, it's what I was origionally going to go for but when insurance told me they would only cover the gastric I decided to do more research and found some statistics showing how much faster gastric patients lose weight and the higher sucess rate, not to mention gastric being more permanent with less need for additional surgical revisions (keep that in mind if pain is steering you towards the lap band) Goodluck!

Topic: RE: HELP!! I feel my 16 yr old is out of control....
Honestly Angela it sounds just like my mother and I, she had the surgery back in 1996 and lost over 150 pounds and here I am right now in 2008 with a drain in me having just had the surgery last tuesday at 400 pounds, and thats after losing at least 40 pounds. (no scale would weigh me until my bariatric surgeon's and that was after a few months diet.) I know you dont want him to have the surgery but I would advise you to be open to letting him look into it, especialy if insurance would cover it. Honestly having the surgeyr laproscopically made it very tolerable, I havent found myself needing pain meds for days!

The bottom line though is that he will only make a change when he feels the need to so all you can do is be supportive. Best of luck to you and your family!

Hi angela,
You have identified a very common problem in our society today! The first issue is whether your son sees his weight gain as a problem. Until he does, your frustration and planning for getting him help are going to be fruitless.

You are only 2h from us in Cincinnati. We have one of the best NONSURGICAL programs for teen weight management in the country. Of course, we have a surgical option here as well, but I certainly hear you about the need to start with something like our HealthWorks program first and foremost. Look at the info on our website and make some calls, but only after he is engaged.

best wishes,

Topic: HELP!! I feel my 16 yr old is out of control....

My 16 year old is out of control with his eating....I don't know what to do.  I had the surgery and I really don't want that to happen for him.  I have told him no eating after 9...he sneaks.  I don't bring things in the house that are bad but he works at McDonalds and eats there and makes his own money and spends it on the food that I don't allow in the house when he is out with his friends.  Or buys it and sneaks it in his room.  I have talked to him throughly about what runs in the family health history such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and back problems.  I looked into "fat camps"  and sorry but I don't have thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars...since our insurance covers nothing for weight problems.  Please if anyone has any suggestions on what to do....I am all ears.

Angela
