Topic: Help
Hi, i have not been on the board in a very very long time, but I had my surgery 2 years ago and thank goodness everything is still going great. I have lost 90lbs and am very very happy, I have a 15 year old daughter who i see is heading down the same road as i was, she just eats to eat i try and explain to her not to do that but I know she feels that i may be putting her down and i am not, i just dont want her to go througth what i went through being overweight, what can i do to help her get into the right mind set? if that is the correct way to say it. She is involved with softball but that is only once a week, what other suggestions would you all have about getting her out and about and moving :-)
thanks for any and al Ideas!

Thanks for your reply and congradulations, Jay! I've read a lot of your posts because your situation seems similar to my daughter's and I'm very excited to read your post-surgery comments. (I'm originally from Oxford, MS...we Mississippians gotta stick together!)

Thank you so much for your reply! I know she is anxious and I am excited for her, but I would hate for her grades to suffer from having to miss too much work.

I would say 2 weeks. I had my surgery when I was 17 and exactly two weeks after my surgery I went back to work. Besdides the fact that I was tired much quicker than usual I was fine. From my experience with high school besides walking from class to class and I deff could have done that. Good luck!!
Topic: RE: My 15 year old son - 1 year post-op pics
hi Cynthia I just read your story @ your son, I think that is great! I have a 16 year old he's 5'7"and 250plus lbs. We've done diets like low cal/low fat,he;s always playing sports, basketball, football, baseball, and he walks almost everyday. He's been on a diet half his life because doctors have told me since he was a baby to put him on diets. In high school he's miserable, has low self esteem. The girls are ruthless and relentless with anyone overweight, especially teen boys.Girls think he's cute buuuut you know your a great friend but "i can't go out with you",I had RNY april 08and I'm down a little over 80 lbs.My son is like you had surgery to help you,& I always remind him to eat less, no sugar, exercise more but he's only lost 4 lbs & I don't know how else to help him. He's playing baseball on the freshman team & hates that he gets left out all the time because of his size.I wish he could have the "Band" so he would be heathier,& more free to be a teen and have a great time in highschool.the pedi doc's have watched over him since he was a baby.9lbs 7oz,head 17cm,shoulders25cm just a big kid and i feel hopeless. You have any suggestions on how to help?I hope your son lives to his highest potential, and understands how lucky he is.

Topic: RE: x-post: ARTICLE: Liver disease in fat children latest obesity risk, experts say
Thank you for posting this.
I have a power point on childhood obesity I do, and I've been asked to speak at a local school. I will be using Jeff Olson's 'The Slight Edge' philosophy as the basis for my talk with them. Making a few good choices, or simple disciplines, daily - over time - will bring the desired result.
I am going to use and reference this article, along with the other information I had gathered.
Thank you again. We're actually killing our children.

Topic: Obesity and Stepchildren
I am just coming to this board because of my step daughter. I am having VSG on Nov 29th and as soon as I told my mother in law (her grandmother) she asked me if I had talked to her about it yet. She is going to be 15 in a week and wears a women's 24. I am not sure how much she weighs and this is sensitive since I am the step parent. We have a great relationship (I married her dad when she was 4) and talk about weight issues together but I don't feel like I can push too much. My DH's family has so many health issues that I worry (type 2 diabetes, cancer, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, Colan cancer) that I really worry about her. she has developed asthma and is on both steroids and an inhaler to control it. She is aware of her weight issue and "diets" off an on. Her mom went with her to a couple of weight loss programs (they are both overweight although the daughter is now larger) but nothing is really working. I am at a total loss as of what to do. I want to help her. I was thin as a teen and high school is hard enough then. I can not even begin to imagine it that overweight. Any advice will be appreciated.
Topic: Need help getting back on track
I am 16 years old, had my surgery in 07. and I am back up to probably 280, not good at all and I have lost alot of muscle because of my lack of protein. I am really disappointed in myself and can't stand to think about it. I just scheduled for another fill, I have three fills since my surgery, in 07. Hopefully this will be the start to get back on track. I am not as big as I was when I got the surgery but no where i want to be.
I am about to turn 17, and plan on seeing my family in ohio soon, but before that my main goal is to lose more weight and look better because I am ashamed to go up there looking like this because I know there going to say in their heads "what happened?"
I am asking for your advice/thoughts/help on how exactly I can get back on track. Its rough right now.
If you have time read my profile blogs and that will tell you my history, goals and much more than this post.
Thank You!
Good Luck to all!

Topic: RE: What did you tell or are you telling your teachers at school?
I was in the same position when i had my surgery, lapband. I lived in a really small town where everybody tells everybody and knows each other. So I just told them I had to have surgery, then I ended up saying stomach surgery, nobody really asked questions, because I knew if I told one teacher everybody or atleast alot of people would find out. It worked out because everybody was amazed at my weight it was sudden thats not how lapband works. So yea I told a lie but it was my choice and for the best of my interest I think. But teachers would support you in that decision as far as surgery but in my town the teens could go both ways so I just didnt say anything about it.
