Topic: RE: Please help me help my 14 year old son
I completely understand what you went through and what your son will go through I'm 15 and its deffinetly not easy. Why dont you look into have WLS for him? If you've done everything you can and havent had much results I would say look in to it. Instead of Gastic bypass why not the lap band? I agree that he deffinetly needs more support than that but I find my support on OH through my state message board its like a big family there. Maybe you should make a post and ask for some help over on your state message board. You wont find much help on this board its very inactive now.
Good luck, if your son has a facebook or myspace and he wants to talk to someone I wouldnt mind talking to him. Just message me if you want my info.

Topic: RE: Something wrong with me or am I just lucky
I doubt theres anything wrong with you, maybe your body just burns off calories quicker than others. I would say thats pretty lucky indeed. But I would suggest doing so cardio because that junk food might wear on your heart later
Topic: RE: 310 pounds at 17 years old
Cardio is deffinetly the best right now! Treadmill (Walking) Bicycling, Swimming, Elliptical are all good cardio workouts and cardio is the best way to help your weight loss. It helps burn the callories. Slowly incline your time, so if your walking 25-30 minutes a day add 5 minutes a day or everytime you go or even every week you go. 1 week your going 25 the next your going 30 and so on and so forth. Keep doing that till you at 1 hour and your able to do it 5 times a week. Trust me it works thats what I do and right now i'm at 50 minutes on the treadmil 15 minutes on the bicycle and I do about 20 reps on most of the weight machines at home. Weights really dont help you lose weight but help you tone and may help with loose skin a bit.
Best of luck to you, I dont know much about GERD but I do know what its like to be overweight so if you ever wanna talk or need advice feel free to send me a Message

Thank you for the reply Tom. You are right, my doctor told me my heart is fine, and I'm now taking Prevacid. So far, I haven't had any major issues with it. However, I still have the feeling of trouble breathing and it can keep me up if I eat a big meal before bed. I'm gonna stop doing that. I've always heard people who lose weight can sometimes fix their GERD and stop taking medicine for it. I was happy to hear that I could potentially finally get rid of this stuff by losing weight.
I try to do about 25-30 minutes every 3 days on a local track with my friends, and that seems to help. Though so far my weight seems to stay around 310-315. I suppose I should also do weight resistance too, or maybe cardio.

Hi Steve,
Of course I will tell you to see your doctor about this, but that said, not likely to be your heart at your age, even with a weight problem. Much more likely to be GERD. If the prilosec gives you trouble, one simple test that ER doctors do is a "GI ****tail" that has a few things in it but importantly, Mylanta. Try that sometime to see if the straight antacid helps you.
And regarding your weight, I agree that loss of 100 pounds will probably resolve the GERD, in addition to adding years to your lifespan.
Good luck with your journey!

Topic: RE: I've failed my child
Dawn - I feel for your pain, my daughter is now 18 and heading to college soon, but in the last 3 years has ballooned to over 200 lbs.... It's tough when they are young, but hell when they are teenagers. Kids can be mean, but teens get depressed. I've been lucky in having a very strong willed, independent thinker for a kiddo *****alizes shes to blame for being where she is. She hates exercise and nothing we've tried has changed that much....
I only have a few thoughts regarding exercise for a younger kiddo - have you tried some 'fun' activities like roller skating, or playing games on the Wii as a family? Maybe bike riding, going fishing or bowling is an option? Most cities have youth legues and they will get a surprising amount of exercise doing it.
As for food - have you figured out if she has a trigger food, such as being a carb addict or something else? Try taking all processed carbs out of your meals at home - you can control that and have only fresh veggies, protein and fruits for deserts. Make dinner a family affair where everyone has to pitch in and contribute. Perhaps if she helps make dinner, she'll be more invested in eating it and take pride in having contributed to something.
With everyone being on top of her, yelling and focusing on the food - it may actually push her to eat more as a comfort... Just my two cents worth.
Hope some of these ideas can be helpful - it's not easy and will require change for everyone. We've done these ourselves and my daughter gets irritated because she doesn't like what we have for dinner now (a lot of fish, grilled chicken and veggies), but I keep other things around like sandwich meat too... She can pick what she wants to eat, but it somewhat limited in caloric intake because her options are limited.
Either way, I'm sorry to hear of your struggles and wish you well battling them. Good luck!

Topic: Please help me help my 14 year old son
I am a mother of a 14 year old boy who has a bmi of about 45. I am very concered about his health. I have had a weight problem my whole life, but in July of 2008 I had gastric bypass surgery and have lost 110 lbs. I have been trying long before my surgery to help him because I do not want him to have the high school life I had. I was miserable, people made fun of me and when all my friends were out on date, I was home stuffing my face because nobody ever asked me out. I have tried going to nutritionist with him, not having junk in the house and I have recently got him into the OWL program at Childrens Hospital in Boston. It is a great program, but they only see you every 6-8 weeks and he needs more support than that. Please does anyone have any other ideas? Even if you know of a website that will give me a meal plan that I can use. I am really afraid that my child is going to have severe medical problems if he does not get a handle on this now.
Thank you
Jane

Topic: Something wrong with me or am I just lucky
Hey there, so I've been playing this game called World of Warcraft for the past 4 years now and ever since then I have become very lazy. Ever since I started playing I have not really been eating healthy. I usually just snack alot and eat junkfood such as chips, cookies, TV dinners, gatorade, soda, etc. I'd say for the past 2 years I've done nothing but get up and head straight to my PC and start playing (independent study) I don't work out, exercise, anything. The thing is, I have not really gained much weight at all (maybe 5 pounds) which I find very odd. So, am I just very lucky or is there something that might be wrong with me?

Hello!
My name is Steve. For awhile now, I've been overweight. Right now, I'm currently around 310, possibly lower, but definitely above 300 pounds. I don't know if this is a result of my terrible acid reflux and GERD, but I have those issues as well. I'm starting to exercise, eat better, and take better care of myself, and I want to lose about 100 pounds or so. My BMI is 42. My main concern right now though is my heart. I have terrible GERD, some nights it will keep me up all night, I will be so scared I will take an aspirin before I can sleep properly. What scares me about that is, it usually helps. Surely GERD couldn't be put off by an aspirin.
My doctor says my heart is fine, and my halter monitor that I wore because I had to go the ER (panic that I was having a heart attack after Prilosec stirred up my GERD again) is normal. I've got an appointment soon, and I'm just curious if being overweight like this can cause heart problems. I know this sounds stupid, but I like to hear a second opinion. Until I get some GERD medication that won't cause terrible side-effects (with the prilosec, I woke up one night sweating, heart racing, and have since felt like it's palpitating and speeding up for no reason at many inactive times) I can't be sure that it isn't something more serious. Right now, I have pain in my shoulders and chest. It feels pressured and my arm hurts.
Such as a hernia or a vitamin deficiency or something else.
Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Oh Robin I wish I could give you a big hug! xxxxxxxx!!!!! We are in the same boat. My daughter is morbidly obese as well. Do ppl actually think we don't care about our kids so we LET them get obese. I worry everyday about what is happening to my daughters body. I just keep trying to fight the battle. Lately she has started asking questions showing interest in exercising again such as walking at the park and playing. I'm obviously no expert but I've decided not to sugar coat anything about her being overweight. for example she asked me last night if her face looked fat, and usually I would avoid it by saying you are so beautiful who cares or something to that effect because I didn't want to hurt her feeling and sometimes I would just be to tired to deal with hurt feelings honesty can cause. So when she asked me that I said yes it does. and I told her that I'm only telling her because I want to be honest with her and the only way that its going to change is if we work together but mommy cant do it all for her. We have been going to the park which is beside the dog park we've been taking our new puppy and walking around and then playing on the playground part. well shes been wanting to skip the walking part (which is about 1/2 mile) and only wanting to do playground stuff claiming that should be enough. so of course we've had to discuss it to the10th degree. That's also a big battle due to the obesity any kind of activity prolonged sucks as we know so getting her to do it is a battle. So this is my latest attempt to help her and myself. I'm trying to feel positive but our track record scares me. please stay in touch Robin maybe we can help each other. I hope you get this soon I know something is going on with the email not notifying ppl of their responses. Take care, Dawn.
