Topic: I am almost a week out now
Wow.....I can't believe it's been almost a week now since my open RNY. I had my surgery done on Tuesday, December 14th did really well. I weighed today just because I was curious and I have lost 12 pounds already. Amazing since my stomach is still swollen. YAY.... and tomorrow is my week anniversary! I am doing wonderfully, much better than I expected. I will tell you the worst part about this has been the gas pains after the surgery. They are horrible. I haven't had any pain really except for the gas pains from them inflating my stomach for surgery. Oh, sneezing and coughing hurt really bad at first. Anyway, my scar looks great too and it's 9 inches long. My mom and I measured it a few minutes ago. Haha I thought it would be smaller but oh well. I am getting a little tired of mashed potatoes and sugar free pudding but it's not that bad. It's amazing that I would rather have water to drink than other stuff and I love chewing on ice from Sonic...America's Drvie-In! I will quit rambling now and post more later.

Hey Carmella- Ashley's story really is heart-breaking. I feel really bad for her, and which there was something that could be done to help her. Have you looked into the other surgeries? Theres the RNY, which Ashley had, and the Duodenal Switch, and then the Lap Band... I think those are all the main contenders anyway... (someone pipe up if I missed any). The RNY has helped alot of people, but it's also a scary prospect. I don't actually know that much about the DS, and didn't even hear about it until I joined this board, after my own surgery. I opted for the Lap Band, because the RNY was too scary to me. Whatever you decide, decide it for yourself, and make sure that you are comfortable with your decision. That of course doesn't mean you can't be scared (you'd be crazy not to at least be nervous!), I cried like a baby the night before my surgery, and I think it's because I didn't let myself get nervous right before hand, and so it all came out at once. AIM me sometime if you wanna chat. MysticTaeza Sarah

We're allowed to drink diet soda. Our surgeon just says we may want to pour it into a glass and stir it with a fork a little to get it so it's not so carbonated because the carbonation can be a little uncomfortable. I haven't heard that it stretches your pouch because the part of your stomach that they make your pouch out of doesn't really stretch, and it's a liquid, so it goes right through you, remember, there's nothing that holds the liquids in your pouch like your old stomach, the hole at the bottom of your pouch leading into your intestines is always open. So, if you want some, go ahead. I know many many post op patients who drink diet soda and are just fine.

You aren't supposed to drink soda because of the carbonation. If you let it go flat you can have some diet soda. But you definitely need to make sure its completely flat because you don't want to stretch your pouch. Also, make sure you get caffeine free diet soda. Caffeine will make you get dehydrated.
