Topic: RE: I am almost a week out now
Thanks so much. Yeah, I had open because insurance wouldn't pay for lap...they say it's too experimental. Oh well, I am just thankful I got to have the surgery at all. It's going great too. I am doing amazing. Today was the first time I have been out of the house since I came home from the hospital. I had to do a little Christmas shopping for the family before Friday so I used today to do it since I felt so good. I was in Wal-mart doing great and then I got sick because I hadn't eaten enough for the day. I came home, ate a little bit and felt so much better. What is really interesting is the fact that I haven't been hungry once yet and my stomach hasn't growled at all. It's crazy and weird.
I will talk to you soon I hope. I would really love to chat more sometime. I have AOL,Yahoo and MSN messengers.

You won't see this til you're back, but I hope everything goes well with you. It'll be rough, but worth it! Best wishes...and I hope you don't have to be in the hospital for Xmas!!

I had my surgery the day after you...what a long week, eh?
My surgeon doesn't have me on full liquids and mashed potatoes yet...still clear liquids for me...I salivate at the sight of something else, though. Aahhhhh.
You had yours open? How is that going for you? I had mine lap so I've been up and around a lot already...just get tired really easily.
I go in to see the surgeon tomorrow...can't wait to see how much I've lost.
Congrats on everything. Hope it all goes well.

Hi,Meghan,
I'm Kim, I had WLS June 2,2004.
I'm 40 years old.
So far I lost 90lbs ,my doughter,Ashley is 15 and 350lbs 5'8". and my surgern said she can't do it on any one under 18 years old. We live in Indiana . I've heard some other states will do it , like Ohio.
What state , do you live in?
Thanks
Kim
Topic: RE: Diet soda
I didn't see you had the DS. I looked it up and the only thing different from RNY vs DS is that the top part of the gastric bypass is connected below the duodenum (duodenum is the part that opens and closes at the bottom of your stomach where the food leaves your stomach and enters your intestine) which keeps the upper part of the digestive process the same as before surgery (except that your stomach is smaller). Your pyloric valve continues to regulate the emptying of the stomach contents into the duodenum and all of the hormones and secretions that occur in the duodenum continue after surgery. I would say that you can probably drink some soda, but would have to stretch it out over a long period of time otherwise it'd give you a feeling of fullness because it'd fill your pouch. It still wouldn't stretch it though.

Hey Jen!
I feel excatly the same way as you do. My parents are now coming to be more supportive, but only because they are sick of me telling them that this was not their descision its one I have to make for myself.
I decided I was going to have my surgery, and started to get the ball rolling... right into a brick wall! I called my insurance company to see how to go about this, and they said it was a written exlusion on my policy (meaning they cover the surgery when its medically necessary, but my dad's employer opted out of this coverage to save money)
They then told me that during open enrollment I could have the option to get on another plan, but that it wouldnt matter becuase as of January2005 they wouldnt be covering it at all.
So that was the end of that! I definately can't afford to have it without insurance coverage.
Anyways I started looking into other options, and came across Wellspring Camps in New York.
Its much less expensive than the surgery, and becuase they deal with not only diet and excercise, but also the psycological and behavioral change aspect they had a very high success rate! Average person losing about 4lbs a week... and continued to loose the wieght once they got home!
So even though WLS is a great option, Its not for everybody. And I would encourage you to look at some other options...
the camps web address is http://www.wellspringcamps.com
Good luck in your journey!
