Topic: RE: I've failed my child
Thank you for the insight. She told me tonight that she is a happy chubby girl and fits in good with her friends and that she is fine the way she is. I am fine with that, as I've always told her that is what is important to me for her.  I'm still working on the DH part as in I've told him to shut the f up and get off her back. That's always been my claim that she is full aware of her weight condition and she doesn't need him in her face reminding/yelling etc. Again thank you.

I was your daughter 12 years ago.  I don't feel like my parents failed me, they both have weight issues of their own.  I feel like the worst thing they ever did for me was what your husband is doing, yelling at her about food, that's the worst thing you could do the her mentally.  Because believe me, when she gets old enough to drive and get her own food, she will REBEL against you hard core.  Thats what I did, as soon as I went to college and could eat what I wanted, I gained 150lbs.  I had GBS 3 weeks after I turned 20 and it was the best thing I ever did.  You need to keep her in a program, but I am telling you, do not stress her out about it.  Don't buy junk, she wont eat it.

Hi there!
congratulations on your weight lose! awesome! My 14 year old son is 231 pounds and has a bmi of 42. Considering lap band surgery for him. Wondering whether gastric would be better for him over the long term. He loves sweets and the gastric would be better for him because eating sweets would make him sick so he couldnt do it. Why did you choose one surgery over another? Any advice about the pros and cons of either surgery? Thanks, jelizabeth

Hi Sabrina,
i have a 14 year old son who has a bmi of 42. I am considering lap band surgery  for him but because he is so young i wonder if he will be able to comply with the program. Do you think a bypass or mini-bypass is easier for teens? Why did you decide to have the bypass instead of the lap band. How do the 2 operations compare in the future as far as maintaining weight lose?  Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated. Thank You, jelizabeth

Hi Jane,
I wanted to write to you because i also have a 14 year old son who has a bmi of 42. I am considering lap band surgery for him during summer vacation. There are a number of surgeons in Mexico who will operate on teens. I was surprised at how many people go to mexico for wls. The prices are very reasonable as well. I would not consider doing something like this unless I truly believed that there was no other way for my son to lose and maintain weight lose. He has been unable to participate in organized sports for the past several years because the weight prevents him from being able to run fast enough or for any prolonged period of time. He used to play hockey, baseball, soccer etc. But now he becomes short of breath so easily. And of course being unable to participate in these activities just makes the situation worse. He has also put up with alot of teasing at school because of his weight. Its painful to watch all of these things happen. I think wls will give him a chance to improve all these areas of his life. I would love to hear back from you. And with one in every five usa kids being overweight , I know we are not the only ones confronting this problem. Thanks, jelizabeth

Thank you so much for offering to talk to him.  I will definately see if it is something he would like to do.  I see you have a ticker, have you had WLS or are you just trying on your own?
