Dear Amy, This is a great question. I started looking in on the surgery when i was 17, and had it done when I was 18 1/2, this was back in December. My surgeon was Dr. Dirk Rodriguez in Dallas. He is a strongly skilled surgeon but i realize you arent from dallas. I have lost 65 lbs in 3 months off the lap- band and its been great. ive gained more confidence and actually love shopping now... if you or your daughter have any questions you can email me. Best of luck with your sugery, Megan

Hey everyone...haven't been around here in a while, but I was browsing and thought I'd post a little check in... I'm currently down about 65 lbs in about 3 months...getting frustrated because I've been feeling hungry constantly, but I'm trying to deal with it and not eat... Been working out 2-3 times a week for an insane amount of time at the gym and I actually enjoy it a lot. My boobs are deflating...it's really sad. But otherwise, a lot of the time I don't really notice a difference from before surgery...which I know isn't true, because I'm down to a size 18 from a size 28, and I have a medium shirt that fits me. But I look in the mirror and I look at my skin and I still see the 360lb me. I'm 270 now...but it just makes me realize just how far I have to go. Makes me ashamed to see how far I let myself go, too. But things are getting better, and I feel awesome most of the time. My friends are massively supportive and talk me out of my slumps most of the time. How is everyone else doing? Lauren

Hi, I am a worried mom. I am getting the surgery 4/25 (soon!) and I am hoping some of you can give me a little insight for my own daughter. I told her to seriously think about surgery because I am getting it and she will see everything will be ok and because she has some serious health issues that could be reversed with the surgery. She is 14 (Birthday of 1/8/91) -- she has been overweight all of her life, has PCOD, diabetes type 2, fatty liver, high blood pressure, a slight scoliosis and scheurmanns disease (bad back/disc issues) and lately we have been dealing with some really severe depression. Really really bad depression. =\ I want her to live and I want her to live happy, not feeling forever like she doesn't fit into life. She is 5'8" and weighs about 265 mostly belly fat too so that is very tough on her. I found out about her diabtetes when she was 9 and we have been on so many diets and to so many nutritionists it would make your head spin. The PCOD has really messed her up. She is active, has aYMCA membership, swims, rides her bike, is not a couch potato, is in volleyball at school, walks the dogs daily, etc..etc... Anyway, who is the youngest you know of to have had the surgery? What exact kind of surgery? Was it a good or bad thing? Who is your surgeon? What do you, as teens, think is too young of an age? If you had the surgery at a young age, were you ready for it? Did it help you feel so so so much better or make you feel incredibly worse? Was the pain worth it? Any other words of advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, A worried sick mom....

Topic: Need Support...
Hello everyone. My name is Brandi, I am 18 yrs from Texas. I am new to this message board but found it searching. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice or tips for gastric bypass. My mom AND sister have both had it done and are doing great. I started to notice as i even mention it to friends the comments and remarks i get back like "why are you doing that" or "you dont need that". They are saying them because I do not look like my weight. I was just wondering if any of yall had to deal with this and had some tips. It does not bother me that much because they do not see the "behind the scene" stuff but i was just wondering. Also, I go for my consultation April 7.

Topic: RE: loose skin and the younger set?
I had gb in november. I've lost about 75 lbs and my skin is still pretty normal. I excersise frequently though. my boobs have not gotten any smaller and if they dont, ill get a reduction and lift. if they do get smaller, i imagine they will sag quite a bit. my thighs are a little loose, but my stomach and arms are not yet. i have a male coworker who had the surgery over a year ago. when i first met him, 7 months ago, he was saggy. but now that hes stopped losing weight so fast, he has been able to tone up. he still has a little squish in his tummy, but everything else (that i've seen) is normal.

it took me either just under or just over a year to lose it. it was hell, having to eat and drink basically the same thing day in and day out...but at the time i thought the outcome was gunna be great...but alas...it was not :/ and the whole thing with your pre op testing, you can ask for your medical records from your doc, which contain all your test results and you could take them to another dr if you find one. Just a lil FYI, i didnt know that before i was talking to one of the nurses at my docs.

Hi tina, The reason for loosing so much is my doc wants me to be under 300 before operation, and I guess my liver is large, so he thinks it will help with that as well, since i am going to have open rny- and then it would be safer. I go through a kiaser program, where everyone- regarless of their weight- has to loose 10% of their intial wieght, it is a department policy- but the extra expectation for me was just my doctor... he is very by the book as well, so i dont think calling is an option... but I think i am going to meet with him to discuss options (like a different weight loss plan- right now i am on a calorie restrictive diet) Thank you for the ideas and support tho... it means a lot to me right now
