We're both doing well. I almost feel normal again so that's good. Haha. About to go meet up with my personal trainer actually. I don't want any excess skin.

Topic: New to the site :)
Hello everyone!

I just wanted to introduce myself. It looks like this forum doesn't get used too often! I just turned 18 years old and I have a BMI of 30, which is considered obese. I was actually nervous about joining this site because I didn't know what people would think of me. I am only 5 foot tall, and weigh about 162 pounds, and that is why I was scared. I didn't want people to be like, oh she's not that overweight or she's just doing this for attention. But I am truly not, I deal with severe self concept and consciousness issues just as bad as the next person. I believe I suffer from something called "body dismorphic disorder", it's kind of hard to explain, but in general you just see yourself a lot different than others see you. Please don't criticize me, because I would never do that to any of you. I just wanted to get to know other people who might be dealing with the same issues I am facing. Thanks for listening :)
That is a hilarious face. Lol

Hi there. I know it's been a while since you posted but I hope you're still around.

I think what you're going through is totally normal. Seeing a therapist would not be a bad idea but not because what you're feeling is wrong, just cause they could help you work through it.

I think that whenever we give up a coping mechanism that we've relied on it's kind of like having to take a step backwards in our emotional development and learn how to do it again from scratch without that old crutch. Perhaps food was like that for you and your brain is having to adjust to knowing you can't use it like you used to. And I don't just mean using it in a negative way either. For lots of people, when we use something to cope with hard/bad feelings we use the same thing to deal with and show happiness and excitement. I know I use food more on the positive side than I do the negative. I don't eat when I'm depressed, I eat to celebrate. Can't do either any more I guess

Anyway, I just wanted to say this and I hope you're feeling better these days but I'm starting to frequent this forum even though I'm 26 cause I had a lot of great, slightly older friends when I was a teen and I think it's important to pay it back.

My surgeon's minimum age was 18. I don't know if anyone "would" do it but I'd recommend not. When I was 18 I really wanted to get RNY but my parents said no and there was nothing I could do. 8 years later I decided I wanted to get lap band and I'm happy with the fact that I went through all the maturing you do between 18 and 26 before making this decision. Weight loss surgery is not an easy answer. With lap band, you normally have to do a liquid diet for a couple of weeks before surgery and a couple after and then soft foods so it's about 6 weeks total that you're eating basically nothing and you don't have the help of the band at this point, it's pure will power. The band only starts to work after one, two, three, who knows how many fills it will take to reach the point where you have good restriction. So what this means is that your daughter might have anywhere from a couple of months to a year where she's supposed to be living on very little food but the help of the band hasn't kicked in yet so it's like gritting your teeth and just getting through it.

Does that sound like something your 14 year old wants? Does it sound like a decision a young teen is ready to make? As adults, we can be fully informed and realize that something's going to be difficult but we're committed to it. I don't think even at 14, I would have been able to handle what I'm going through now and I was a really mature kid.

Topic: RE: Great Summer Camp in NC for coed age 10-18
I was a counselor at a weight loss camp in New England and I would not recommend them.

For one thing, most kids that came (and returned each year) lost a lot of weight and gained it back when they went home. It's not due to lack of will power or effort, but rather, the kind of diet you eat at camp and the amount of activities you do is impossible to keep up once you return home. Exercising even 2 hours a day 7 days a week when you're home is not the same as playing sports, running, hiking, swimming, etc. 10 hours a day and being fed 1200-1500 calories.

These camps don't work for the majority of people and what's more, "dieting" is the number one cause of weight gain. Everyone on OH is living proof of that.

I was a fat kid, ever since I can remember but I wasn't huge. It was my mom taking me to WW and starting me on every plan under the sun before I'd even hit puberty that began my life of food obsession and shame around eating.

Please, don't spend $2000 to send your kid away for the summer. Use that money to get them into something they really enjoy that keeps them active, learn the concept of healthy at every size, teach them intuitive eating and learning to enjoy healthy foods rather than dread them. And most of all make sure they never think they're worth any less to you fat than they would be thin.

Hey There,
You may see my recent post about the Childrens camp in NC. My daughter is 14 and went there when she was 12, She  lost 30 pounds in 6 weeks, and is planning to go back this summer.
I am afraid of doing surgery on her at this age. I think camp is a great alternative. If you have any questions , just ask me..
