Hey again,

So I've set up the community. Here's the link: http://community.livejournal.com/bariatric_group/

Hopefully this works. I'm going to see if i can find others who are interested.

 Hey,

That would be cool. I haven't started anything yet...it was more of a "who would be interested?" if I started a group.

I now have the free time to do so because exams are over, so i'll let you know. :)

I would join but I'm 26. But I'm on LJ and have had WLS. What's the community called?

 Hey,

I'm 19, so we're close in age. :)

i had my surgery done in January. I know i'm not the person you asked, but I can answer your questions and give you a viewpoint.

I don't regret it--it's only been 4 months, but the progress I've made is so great to me that I can't imagine going back to the way I was before. I've lost 54 pounds so far.

Yes, it's been tough, because at this age, I feel like we're still young and a lot of people usually ask "are you sure you're mature enough to make a decision of this magnitude?" I will never say it's easy, but anything worth getting in life is worth working hard for it. So i wouldn't reverse it. Yes, i get frustrated sometimes because I can't always eat like my friends. I have to plan things out and be smart about my choices. I can't just eat half a pizza, or order a crapload of food at a restaurant. I live in Canada, and I was able to drink legally at 19. I was only able to drink for a little while before the surgery, and now alcohol is can't be part of my lifestyle. You're only 18 and I know in the US most people can't drink before age 21. So ask yourself--are you going to miss that "milestone" that most young adults celebrate?

I'm a university student. My story in a nutshell--my mom had the surgery and has lost 200 pounds in a year. I was so motivated by her and so sick and tired of being the fat girl--of feeling like crap, having low self esteem, and hating the way i looked. I knew i was on the fast track to ending up how my mom did. So i chose to have the surgery done.

It's normal to be nervous. It would be weird if you weren't. Being nervous is a sign that you're taking this seriously and you're thinking logically about a huge lifestyle change. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. :)

Topic: interest in a LJ community
 Hey,

I'm a user on LiveJournal and i'm thinking about starting a community over on LJ for those who have had weight loss surgery and those who are considering it, but for a younger age group--anywhere from 14 to 25. I'm 19, and I know you guys are out there, but I'm not sure how much of an interest there would be.

The purpose would be to discuss anything related to weight loss surgery, from progress updates, thoughts, doctors, surgery types, nutrition and exercise, etc.

Let me know what you think. :)

Hey! I've noticed this place is kind of dead too, but it's nice to meet a fellow teen going through something similar to me. Though I am much heavier than you, I still feel for you, knowing that being heavy at all isn't fun. I'm 19 and weigh 340lbs. It sucks, I can't do the things anybody my age can. Sometimes I just feel like an outcast.

Friend me if you want to share our journey's together. I'm Amber, btw :)

I would give opposite advice of the previous posters. Get rid of the diet foods, get rid of the sugar free, get rid of all that crap that messes with our bodies and makes us unable to ever feel full or eat pleasurably.

If you were a fat kid then obviously you're well intentioned but sometimes the worst thing you can do is put a kid on a diet. My mom took me to weigh****chers when I was 9 and the rest is downhill from there. I wouldn't have had WLS today if I were not raised in a food restrictive and obsessive environment. My parents always said it was cause they cared about my health but the real message was that if you weren't thin you were not worthy of love. Don't do that to your kids, please.

Google "health at every size" and look into some types of things to focus on good nutrition and being active and quit weighing the kid. The more focus you put on it the more importance she will put on it and it just sets her up for a life of disfunctional eating.

And healthy snacks and meals are great but for a 6 year old that does not mean sugar free junk food. Give her full sugar and full fat healthy foods like yogurt and cheeses and let her body's natural ability to regulate do its job. We screw lots of kids up by trying to reduce their calorie intake which makes them want to eat more.

Lastly, if she's gaining weight despite controlled portions and there is nothing the doctors can detect, the only real answer is that she's sneaking food somewhere and if so, that's the start of binge eating (believe me, I've been there) and the more you put shame and limitations around food the worse it will become.

I wish you the best of luck!

Hi there,

Welcome. And sorry no one has replied. This place is kind of dead

I'm 26 but I enjoy talking to people who are going through what I was a few years back (and my entire life.)

Don't worry about people on here telling you you're not "that fat" it's none of their business. I don't think you'd be able to have weight loss surgery at that BMI but you have every right to look for help and support.

I know about BDD too, though I wonder sometimes if I have the opposite. My whole life I've had a hard time seeing myself for as big as I really am...and then some days in particular I just feel 10 times bigger than I am. Hmph. Maybe it's just hormones or something.

Anyway, maybe try some of the other boards since this one is so inactive?

I was just wondering what exactly the gastric sleeve is in comparison to gastric bypass? Pros and cons?

I just wanted to say thank you for your post. I feel like I'm reading something that is me in the future. I am going to be 18 in May, and was planning on getting gastric bypass then. I am the same exact weight you were, and in the same shoes you probably were in.

I know im not answering your question, but i have a question for you... (lets turn the tables a bit :P)
Do you regret getting your surgery? If you could go back would you reverse it? And finally, Can you just tell me a little bit about your experience/story? Im very nervous and because I seem to be embarking on your same journey you were on, can you help me.
