Hi, I am a worried mom. I am getting the surgery 4/25 (soon!) and I am hoping some of you can give me a little insight for my own daughter. I told her to seriously think about surgery because I am getting it and she will see everything will be ok and because she has some serious health issues that could be reversed with the surgery. She is 14 (Birthday of 1/8/91) -- she has been overweight all of her life, has PCOD, diabetes type 2, fatty liver, high blood pressure, a slight scoliosis and scheurmanns disease (bad back/disc issues) and lately we have been dealing with some really severe depression. Really really bad depression. =\ I want her to live and I want her to live happy, not feeling forever like she doesn't fit into life. She is 5'8" and weighs about 265 mostly belly fat too so that is very tough on her. I found out about her diabtetes when she was 9 and we have been on so many diets and to so many nutritionists it would make your head spin. The PCOD has really messed her up. She is active, has aYMCA membership, swims, rides her bike, is not a couch potato, is in volleyball at school, walks the dogs daily, etc..etc... Anyway, who is the youngest you know of to have had the surgery? What exact kind of surgery? Was it a good or bad thing? Who is your surgeon? What do you, as teens, think is too young of an age? If you had the surgery at a young age, were you ready for it? Did it help you feel so so so much better or make you feel incredibly worse? Was the pain worth it? Any other words of advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, A worried sick mom....

Dear Amy, This is a great question. I started looking in on the surgery when i was 17, and had it done when I was 18 1/2, this was back in December. My surgeon was Dr. Dirk Rodriguez in Dallas. He is a strongly skilled surgeon but i realize you arent from dallas. I have lost 65 lbs in 3 months off the lap- band and its been great. ive gained more confidence and actually love shopping now... if you or your daughter have any questions you can email me. Best of luck with your sugery, Megan

Hi! I am 16, 5'7 and I weigh 419...you or your daughter can write me! I have a profile on here if you want to read it...i have heard as young as 13, BUT...it is more difficult to find a surgeon willing, as most doctors perform only on 18 or 25 and up...even some say that is too young. I am still pre op, although I am getting a date this week...I have to say, that I feel if you don't do something now, then it will only continue to get worse...weight and health wise...my suggestion is to NOT have her jump into anything too soon...let her see you the first 6 months...to REALLY see where this goes...good and bad. i would go to the doctors and find a right diet exercise rigeme for her. try that first...surgery is VERY drastic and should NOT be taken lightly...she needs to REALLY understand this, and be willing to commit to it fully. One of the reasons surgeons don't perform on teens is because, well...most are not ready. she needs to research this on her own, and try littlier steps before jumping into WLS. I am not trying to say that she should just diet...I am just saying that you should probaly go to her pcp and see what they say as to it. But i do believe that she should wait until you at least 6 months to a year out before she decides....I hope I helped!
