Joy, I am a mother of a 16 year old who is investigating WLS for my daughter. She is 5-8" and 275lbs, BMI 43. She has GERD, back pain and asthma. I have not approached her pediatrician yet about WLS, our insurance company won't pay for anyone under age 20 and then they must have BMI of 50 or 40-49 with sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure or bad leg circulation. So our chances are slim. She saw a bariatric MD and he recommended against lap band because of GERD and her age. (There is less weight loss and the reoperation rate is higher than the bypass.) He recommended proximal bypass lap. Of course the price went from $13,000 to $35,000 with those words so we are debating whether now is the right time, should we go to another state where it is cheaper or Mexico?
We will see her pediatrician in about 2 weeks and lay it all out for her and see what she thinks. My daughter has a hard time coming up with a weight loss history as she has tried stuff on her own.
