i think i need help
im 14 and im almost 300 lbs, but no matter how many diets i go on, no matter how much excersise i do i still gain weight, since i was 12 ive gained 50-70 lbs a year and its taken its toll on me, but i dont think any doctors will take me seriously, i have 2 reasons for this, 1 i was hospitalized when i was 13 for depression and self harm, 2 im a cyber/goth and people look down on me for it, but im scared for my life if i keep going like this, ill have serious illnesses im already developing diabetes and ive got a long line of both type 2 diabetes, and multiple cancers i dont know what to do

Hey Crimson,
I'm 19, 316 lbs, and pre-op. My surgery was cancelled twice, the first time because of my age, the second time because of a switch in depression medication. Here is what I recommend:
- Do as much research you can on WLS
- Discuss it with your parents
- Speak to your doctor
- Speak to a nutritionist (you will need to work with a nutritionist if you have WLS)
- Find a therapist you feel comfortable with, see her for a long time, and have her write a recommendation to your surgeon saying that you understand how the decision you are making will change your life, and you are prepared to make that decision.
- Go to WLS group meetings. See people who have had it done, get positive support from people who have been in your situation.
- Don't forget that it is ultimately your decision. Don't let your family or friends choose for you, it is your body, your mind, and your life.
Take care.
Marisa

Hey, i was right in your boat only i was bigger at your age, i was born normal weight but as soon as i started eating everyything went up up up, it seemed like every calorie u put in my body stayed there, nothing ever went away! so i deffinitly know what you mean. I had bouts with undiagnosed depression, thats because i would hide it, im a guy, im a teen, im noit supposed to have these problems right?! but in all seriousness, your a bit young for the wls, i would deffinitly tlk to your main doctor and see what he says, maybe he thinks your ready for it and he will refer you to a dr, but the main thing i have to say is dont get discouraged with all the paper work and doctor visits and everything, it looks like a mountian that can never be reached but im a living breathing, well sometimes... i have sleep apnea, lol, proof that you can reach the top and get to be a "loser" like many of us here
if you wanna talk im me at artisticdork on AIM or [email protected] on MSN
Hey Crimson,
Depending on which surgeons you look at will determine if you can be approved, and the biggest reason is probably because of your age. I know when I was doing research that it said 18 yrs. of age or older. But in other news im glad to see that you want to take control of your life. Who knows, with losing weight you could also battle your depression. Weight loss brings more confidence and self respect. First off, I would start out by eliminating all cokes/carbonated drinks/caffeine. This helps alot and you will see a change with just this. Also, try to eliminate sugar and eat much smaller portions. Perhaps living the diet life of a post-op will give you great results with just doing to diet and not the surgery. You are young so your metabolism is higher and more prone to lose weight, so go ahead and start exercising as well. Also, call a few hospitals and see if they offer support groups, its a great way to meet people and share openly about your condition, they will understand and not judge. Good luck and let me know if you need any help.
