If ANYONE around my age has had WLS in the past, i would REALLY REALLY appreciate it if you could send me an email 2 me @ *****[email protected] letting me know how it was done, what side effects you had, and your current condition. Also, did you need to have plastic surgery afterwards, and how was the healing. Thank you SOOO much!! I am 16 & currently 367 pounds... I have tried everything to lose weight, and besides the fact that diets and exercise take months to lose even a few pounds, I have always gained all of anything that has been lost, PLUS more... in December I was referred to a childrens carteologist who suggested surgery in the future. After approving it with my doctor, my appointment with a nearby surgeon was set up. I was just there on thursday, and he is not sure whether to do this surgery on me because of my age, and the youngest person he has every done this on was 17. (btw, it is not laproscopic, but open) he sent me home and asked me to attend a few support groups and look up some more information along with a book to read. My next appointment to meet with a case worker, social worker, and dietician is on this thursday. Right now, I want the surgery done very badly. I have always been over weight my entire life, and I am just tired of it and everything that goes along with it.

Hey Doris, I had Laparoscopic Roux-en-y(gastric bypass) surgery on May 12, 2003. I was 269 pounds the day of surgery, I was 19. I am now 160 pounds, almost one year later. Side effects? Well, I found out I had gallstones in february and had to have my gallbladder out. This IS a side effect of rapid weight loss and i did NOT take actigall(prevents gallstone formation) as was prescribed(forgot alot). However, one of the stones was too large to form in only a year and my surgeon thought that would have already been there before surgery. My advice in that area: have an ultrasound of your gallbladder if your surgeon does not routinely remove it during RNY. It would have saved my another surgery and alot of recoup. time. He also found an intestinal hernia when he took out my gallbladder, that had to be repaired. Other than that, i'm healthy as can be. I work out 6 days per week and eat very healthy. Although i DO still have major issues with food addiction and I am trying to deal with those. This is not surgery on the brain. I think WLS is a very effective option for anyone in your situation. However, it's not always a walk in the park. Many people cannot eat many things, various meats, etc. Personally I feel completely normal most of the time. I do have excess skin that I am having removed. I still have a pretty bad body image. Don't expect your skin to bounce back just because you are young, many factors go into that and most of the time it won't. I'm having a tummy tuck and breast lift/augmentation in May. I also would consider getting my arms and thights done in the future. E-mail me if you would like, Good luck! Natalie www.spotlighthealth.com is also a good website.
