If the surgery takes place during the school year, how much should we expect my daugher to...

My daugher is 16 years old and 280 lbs., and we are attending the surgeon's required seminar next Friday.  I hope that things will move fairly quickly after that because she is sooooo excited, but I can't imagine we'll get anywhere before Christmas at the earliest.  If he decides that a gastric bypass is the best option, how much school should we anticipate her missing?

Thanks in advance for input everyone!

I would say 2 weeks. I had my surgery when I was 17 and exactly two weeks after my surgery I went back to work. Besdides the fact that I was tired much quicker than usual I was fine. From my experience with high school besides walking from class to class and I deff could have done that. Good luck!!

Thank you so much for your reply!  I know she is anxious and I am excited for her, but I would hate for her grades to suffer from having to miss too much work.

Thanks for your reply and congradulations, Jay!  I've read a lot of your posts because your situation seems similar to my daughter's and I'm very excited to read your post-surgery comments.  (I'm originally from Oxford, MS...we Mississippians gotta stick together!)

I would say 2 weeks. I wasnt the smartest. I went back after a week, and I shouldnt have, I have was way too sore and too tired. I had my surgery on a Tuesday and went back the following Tuesday. I would give it at least a week and 1/2 at the least. I had my surgery my first semester of college. I didnt get all the days counted against me because I had my surgery over Thanksgiving (what a time to have gastric bypass..lol).
Good Luck and if you have any other questions or concerns, just ask!

Have a great day!!
God Bless!!!

I had surgery 7/25/08 and start my first semester at college on 8/26/08. wasn't the best time!! Energy wise, I was great! The only thing is, you're still tryna figure out your dietry needs, so for me, there were a lot of sick days to get over. I guess your daughter will be coming home every day so her luck might be better than mine! Good luck!

My doc kept me in the hospital for 5 days, but many on here tell me they were released in 2-3 days.  I could've gone home after 2-3 days.

I remember being pretty pained for the first week, but after 2 weeks, I could've went back to work..but since I was granted 4 weeks, I took advantage!
