What did you tell or are you telling your teachers at school?

I am having my surgery two weeks from this Tuesday, and I need some ideas on what to tell my teachers.

I think I would tell them straight up what was going on. Just so when the weight does start to come off they dont think your on crack. Teachers have to keep things confindental, so if you dont want everyone to know- dont worry they cant say anything. And another thing, in the begining stages of RNY you may get sick alot, if so- the teachers will give you a break when you have to leave class for a few min, because they know whats going on.

I told people that I saw regularly that I was having a liver biopsy. I did have a liver biopsy done at the same time, so it all worked out. Nobody has mentioned my weightloss.

I just up front told my teachers. I told quite a few people. I was excited about my surgery so the classmates I somewhat talked to, I told. I didnt care who knew! I had the best teachers that semester. One would e-mail me to check on me and she was the sweetest, I think she was more excited about me having the surgery then I was. Even when i see her now, she has a big smile on her face and she tells me how great I look! :-)

I was in the same position when i had my surgery, lapband. I lived in a really small town where everybody tells everybody and knows each other. So I just told them I had to have surgery, then I ended up saying stomach surgery, nobody really asked questions, because I knew if I told one teacher everybody or atleast alot of people would find out. It worked out because everybody was amazed at my weight it was sudden thats not how lapband works. So yea I told a lie but it was my choice and for the best of my interest I think. But teachers would support you in that decision as far as surgery but in my town the teens could go both ways so I just didnt say anything about it.

Jay, first of all I salute your courage in going forward with this life saving procedure. I didn't see exactly which surgery you are having done.  Is it the band or by pass?

Next, as a teacher in a relatively small town in a very very small state (Delaware)  I understand your concerns.  If it were me I would be screaming it from the roof tops! However not everyone is me and I was not in high school when I had my surgery. It was 2.5 yeaars ago I was 46 and just...yes just finishing my student teaching experience. I finished it on a friday and had surgery on Monday.

Anyway, back to your question. Sit down with your parents, the prinicipals, the counselors, and of course the school nurse. Lay it out to them.  ASk their advice and then do what is right for YOU!!  Just remember that by sharing with someone you might help them in the same decision and thus save a life.

I wish you luck and I will be checking here on your progress.  I am often in the mens forum. So if you do not see me here try there.

Good luck and GOD  BLESS.

Gary
