who needs help, everyone is telling me that the lap band is NOT covered by OHIP, but if i was to get a referal from my doctor to a gastrologist, is there any way that it could become covered? i do NOT want a bypass because my mother had the same thing and went through horrible pain, but she is on board with me attempting to get a lap band. People are also telling me surgeons will not do a lap band on someone as young as me, but there has been surgerys like this on 14 year olds (ive done my research). i have tried everything. weigh****chers low-carb diets low-fat diets no fat diets exercise but nothing is working, for someone who has just turned 15, and i mean just--my birthday was on june 10th my BMI should not be 50, im scared in the future i'll be like 700LBS and on those shows you see on like TLC with the people stuck in bed because they weigh too much. i need someone in ontario, fast! any help?

hey  you think youve got it bad, a year ago I thought  i was obese and I decided to get on the scales. It didn't go up far enough. So i pucked up the courage a few months ago and saw my doctor. He took my weight and it was.....  over 400 pounds. 459.4 to be exact. The graph for boys in the Uk only went up to 180. He took my BMI and you thought that yours is bad, well mine is 72. I am super super mobably obese. I am 28.9 stone, my doctor predicted that I will be over 40 stone by 20 maybe 50. I don't know what to do either I try and break a record for fattest teenager or help me lose weight. When I was 13 I gained over about 100 pounds in a year.

hi guy i understand yur pain my daughter is in the same boat. how odd they would cover the more extreame surgery for someone as young as yourself have your insuance send you thier requirements/ guidelines. but yu are younger than your mom and may fair better than her everyone is different. what kind of pain are you talking post surgical or long lasting. i hate to think of you giving up honest there is life after being a teenager. you are worth the fight. best of luck

I am 43, not a teen, but I just had a laparospcopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass on July 3, 2008, and I'm already back to feeling normal.  I only needed pain meds for 36 hours after surgery, and even then it wasn't horrible pain.

Since surgery, my worst experience was throwing up once when I ate too fast, and got an air-bubble stuck in my stomach.  I have had no bad experiences since then.

So, not everyone experiences horrible pain after bypass.  If that's your only option covered by insurance, don't discount it.

Hello, I just had my RNY last tuesday and honestly it's not painful... I havent even been on pain meds for a few days. The lap band is a good choice, it's what I was origionally going to go for but when insurance told me they would only cover the gastric I decided to do more research and found some statistics showing how much faster gastric patients lose weight and the higher sucess rate, not to mention gastric being more permanent with less need for additional surgical revisions (keep that in mind if pain is steering you towards the lap band) Goodluck!
