Does everyone with RNY eventually develop some sort of nutritional deficiency? I fear that because I am so young [just turned 20] that if I do have this procedure, I will one day have a nutritional deficiency, possibly multiple or major ones. If a person takes their vitamins and protein intake religiously and has their blood work annually, is the possibility of developing a deficiency still there?
Hi,
While I am not 100% correct on my answer to your question, I would think that it wouldn't be possible if you are taking them religiously and doing your annually blood work check ups. I think it would be easy to be really easy to have a deficiency if you are not taking a specific vitamin, that is highly needed. Like for example if you completely sip your potassium that could be extremely dangerous. But anyway, I am not too too sure. Why don't ya post this on the main board or the RNY forum and see what answer you get. :)
No, it's not inevitible! If you take care of yourself you should do great. I am 2 1/2 years out (I'm 33). I take all my vitamins and supplements, and my labs are always perfect. I've lost 120 lbs and had a baby (my#4) since my surgery and I've been super healthy the whole time. My baby is healthy, too--she's four months old and breastfeeding exclusively. I have a friend who had RNY and lives on junk food and for some reason feels like crap all the time. Hmm. She also never exercises. It's so hard not to whack her on the head every time I see her, as much as I love her!
You're much more likely to have long term problems if you don't get the help you need.
