Does anyone know is there are any surgeons in South Carolina that will do RNY or LapBand on a teenager?  I have a neice that is 15 soon will be 16 that weighs close to if not 300lbs.  She has been under a physicians care diet for about 6 months now but does not seem to be loosing much weight.  Her mother called some surgeons today and the staff at their office said it would be hard to find anyone to do this kind of sugery on a teen here in SC.  So if anyone knows of any surgeons in SC please let me know so I can forward this information to them.  I really feel Kalynn is severly depressed due to her weight and she goes through so much at school with friends.  I wish I could cast a bit of magic and make everything ok for her but we live in the real world and things dont always go the way we wish.  I love her very much and hate seeing her hurting especially at such a young age.  Brings back alot of memories for me.

I dont know any in South Carolina. I live in North Carolina, but when I was 16 I was trying to get my gastric bypass, but no one would do it until I was 18. There is a surgeon in Richmond,Va that will. I was going to go their but then my insurance would not pay for it. So, I am 18 now and I just got my gastric bypass November 20th. Good luck!

My neice is such a beautiful young girl and she has battled the bulge her whole life however short that has been.  Since reaching high school she has only stuggled more.  Young people can be so judgemental.  I love her so much and being obese myself I can so relate to her pain.  I am only beginning my journey now and could have only wished to have been able to done something about it when I was much younger.  I wanted to thank you for your reply.  Good luck and much success on your surgery.  God Bless you.

Hi LovieMadison,

You might try contacting Dr. Mike Helmrath at UNC. He is the closest pediatric bariatric surgeon that I am aware of. I know he recently relocated from Houston to UNC so will be establishing an adolescent program there, and really does take care of all the teen issues. If you need contact information, I am happy to provide it.

Warmest regards,

Tom Inge
