Dear sarah,
Some of our best patients have come to us from Indiana! So, we would be happy to see you in Cincinnati . We offer adolescents the option of gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and banding (but for banding 18 yo+). You can schedule an appt by calling toll free 800-344-2462, ext 64453 or directly at 513-636-4453. Or email our program coordinator at [email protected].

Alternatively, if you are interested in banding you may want to consider options in Chicago as well.

Warmest regards,
Tom Inge, MD

I had surgery at the age of 17 with Lucile Packard Children Hospital, they are only a few years into doing this surgery for teens, i was number 9 to get it done with them. Cincinnati has been doing it so much longer, their program is the one Lucile Packard is sorta mimicing.

There are some surgery centers that allow people under the age of 18 to be patients, and get surgery. Though I had to wait until I was 18. I started the process when I was 17 just so I could get surgery when I turned 18.  I wish you the best of luck!

Hi Sarah: Just wanted to offer you a big hug.  There are more and more programs that are doing WLS on teens.  I know that NYU in New York City has a teen program for Lap-Band sugery--they were part of a big study.  I'd also research the vertical sleeve gastrectomy as well as the RNY.  (There's a VSG board here on OH).  You're already doing what you need to for insurance approval, so don't worry if you don't arrange something with a surgeon right now.  Once you're closer to completing your six month diet will be plenty of time to line things up... as they'll need your six month info for insurance approval anyways. Good luck. :)

Lap-Band June 14, 2001. Dr. Rumbaut, Monterrey, Mexico.
Lap-Band removed after 7 years and converted to Sleeve Gastrectomy on July 7, 2008 by Dr. Roslin.  I've had three happy healthy Lap-Band babies.... and one VSG baby.  5 years out from revision to VSG.  Gained 55 pounds in past 5 months, now considering DS. :(

Sarah, I was in the same boat. Well, I found a doctor in Richmond, VA. I live in NC so it was about a 9 hour drive. But he was going to do my surgery. Then my insurance would not approve it, after appealing it twice. They said I didnt have enough history, which I really had more then enough. It was mainly because of my age, but they didnt want to admit it. So I turned 18 in march and started over again. Now I am having my surgery Tuesday, and the doctor is only 30 mins away. Just dont give up! I know its discouraging. I am 327, so I know how you are feeling. Keep searching and keep working on it. Dont give up!!! If you need anything, Let me know!
