Just had RNY Gastric Bypass a 3 Days ago
Congradulations! How are you feeling now?
I had the RNY one year 2 days ago. I couldn't be happier. I remember my third day out - how happy I was to be leaving the hospital. Then again, the long ride home from the hospital (3 hours) was just... terrific! *Not really.. slighty uncomfortable*
How much weight have you lost so far, do you know? Just in the three days I was there I lost 11 pounds.
At the time of surgery I weight 239.5, 5'5 and I was 18, as well.
So anyway, congradulations once again! Good luck from here on out - if you need anything.. we're always here. Just write!
Thanks I really appreciate it.
I actually haven't weighed myself, I don't trust my scale. Last time it was 30lbs off so it led to some dissapointment. I have a pre-op check up in two weeks and I guess they're going to weigh me then. I figure it will be more fun like that. lol
I'll probably be writing!
Ah.. it's really good not to weigh yourself all the time.. I always loved going to my follow ups, such as i did three days ago on the 14th to see what their scale said. It's always more fun that way, I think. For some reason, I feel like their scale is more accurate and the staff there was always really supportive, so it was nice to have someone say something about the weight I had lost. Lol -
Write all you want.. I'll definitely be around, as I'm sure others will be as well.
I completely understand that. I've NEVER been in my entire life "the skinny one" or anything even remotely close. I've gone through what a lot of other overweight children, and just people in general have gone through with always being overweight, getting made fun of, etc etc.
I was determined to get the weight off one way or anything, and after 7th grade.. I lost 48 pounds.. by sitting on my butt and eating all summer. Don't tell me how that happened.. I suppose I just lost a lot of my baby fat? -- But then I gained it all back. Being disappointed about this, obviously - I struggled to get it back off until I was 18.. then said screw it when my mom had the surgery when I was 17. I was thoroughly scared to even do anything like she did. She was in bed for 6 months afterwards.. protien levels? - she had none.. it was a really bad experience for her.. so many other things went wrong.. but then I decided to do it about a year later because I knew I had to get it off one way.. and obviously nothing was happening.. so I went through all my stuff to get approved and I got it done. After going through everything, I noticed how supportive all the people around me were and that made me a feel a lot more at ease. So after all that, all I was afraid of was.. ha - losing my hair. Which if you keep your vitamins and nutrients where they need to be.. you have a much better chance of that not happening, at least not as much as I've seen in some other people. Especially being younger, this will help a lot - not only with that, but with skin and it not coming back as much as if you were older. *Which I'm so VERY grateful for!*
Ha - anyway.. basically I obviously started going on about something else.. just saying I know it's been dificult, but it'll get better. You will lose the weight, you just have to work with it.
I have lost a bit of hair.. it's not all THAT bad.. but it's mostly on the sides.. so it kinda sucks.. but whatever - I'm seriously not concerned with my looks at this point. At first, I was taking Hair, Skin, and Nails.. which now I've just recently changed to VistaVitamins just last week actually.. which is specially made for gastric bypass patients.. basically all I take now are the VistaVitamins and iron pills. I really recommend the VistaVitamins once you can start taking all that stuff.
It's not THAT difficult to keep the weight off. You just have to follow directions, don't try to make yourself eat what you can't. The first few months/years are going to be the most critical. I know a few people who can't handle certain foods. In fact, I know one person who couldn't keep anything down at all. -- For some reason, she ate some M&Ms.. *keep in mind she was only like 3 or 4 weeks post-op.. so should not have been eating such items* and she kept them down.. unfortunately, the outcome was her gaining the weight back because she learned to handle an entire extra large bag of them a DAY. -- Basically just do as your doctor sees fit and you should be fine. I know it's dificult.. obviously -- I've been through it -- but it's important to do so.
My surgeon ordered 64 oz a day for liquids and 60g protien a day, as well. the 64oz is going to be hard, and you're not always going to accomplish that, but it's important to at least try your best to see that done.
I know that this conversation was between basically you and Cas, but I wanted to add something to the above statement. I too have high goals, but have found that if you completely say no that you have more cravings. Maybe (and at this point it is probably not a good idea at all but maybe in a few months) you can let yourself have one or two M &Ms instead of zero and just sitting there wanting them. I found that I actually didn't really like the same foods that I did before and that sweets (I had a bite of my first sweet this weekend...birthday cake...1 bite) are REALLY sweet, almost too sweet for my liking now. A nice little side effect to the surgery.
