tips on supporting a spouse having WLS
Being here is a wonderful way to learn. I educated myself as much as possible. My husband had GBS April 2008. He has done fantastic, btw.. but he told our monthly surgical weight loss support group that a supportive spouse is a must! (that made me feel good!)
Read as much as you can get your hands on, ask questions during all the dr visits, and do your best to prepare meals conducive for his new lifestyle. I helped him with his medicines and jotting down all his protein amounts, weight, etc... the first six months or so.
Take a monthly picture, at the end of a year, make him a little book to document this amazing journey. My husband STILL "sees" himself as the old person, not the new guy (he says he doesn't recognize himself in the mirror)
I still help him with packing his lunch and meals away from home, and ask him about his meds and water intake.
It's going to change both of your lives, but oh, for the better!!
BEST WISHES TO YOU BOTH! Amy

You are so welcome! That is great you are going to the support meetings. We still go when we are able. Where are you located? When and what kind of surgery is your husband having? That is great that you are on obesity help to learn. My email is [email protected] am not an expert, just a wife *****ally wanted her husband to succeed and get through this experience as a team. If you ever want to email, I would love to hear from you. It can be tough and scary in the beginning, you don't want your husband to hurt and you know what the doctors/nutritionists tell you but how is it REALLY going to be? Drew doesn't regret the surgery for one second, even with all the lifestyle changes.
Take care, Amy
Amy-
Kouri and I live in Oregon (Portland). Kouri is going to have a VSG early next year. I am so excited for him and so proud of him for all he has already done in exploring and researcing this option. I have heard that there is a higher divorce rate for couples that have had WLS and that info really scares me, we are a close couple and a team as it is, but I still want to make sure that I do everything I can to supoprt and understand him through the changes to come.
I am so happy to hear that your husband doesn't regret his surgery even with the lifestyle changes- sounds like you are a big part in that- i want to be as well!
When did your husband have the surgery?
Thank you so much again for being willing to share with me and for your email as I KNOW I will have so many questions!
Thanks so much Amy!
