Topic: Having vsg surgery and wondering about using cpap
I had one doctor telll me NOT to use the machine for fear of it blowing open my new tummy. What have you all done/been told to do? It's dangerous for me not to use it as my apnea is severe yet so is developing a leak in my newly formed stomach. Thanks for any feed back. I know I will be asking my new surgeon about this, but everyone here is always so helpful.
Topic: RE: Newbie
Hi Shante, I have had my cpap for more than 4 years, setting of 15 and a water reservoir. I sleep on my side, both of them, rarely on my back. The hose is 6 feet long and I just flip it over my head when I roll over, no problems. You will get used to it and see that it really does help. I don't think I could sleep without mine, in fact, I know I can't.
Topic: RE: ...and then she said" Renee, you stop breathing 30 times an hour"
I could barely stay awake during the day. I would fall asleep doing things, watching tv, listening to someone talk. yes....right in the middle of a conversation. All I wanted to do was sleep!!. I was told I stopped breathing 111 times in one hour. I use the cpap now and I have gotten used to it but some nights I just don't want that thing on my face. My sleep is better as I used to fall asleep on and off through out the day but at night I would wake up quite often. Now I sleep for a good 5-7 hours a night trying to work it up to 8 hours. I have had this for years. I was tested years ago , used the cpap for a few weeks and gave up for a few years till I was sleeping more than being awake during the day. I hope that WLS takes care of this.
Topic: RE: New CPAP user wondering is it suppose to be THAT LOUD?
I know this is a day late and a dollar short but I thought I would share this as it may be the problem. I am embarrassed to say that the loud noise was due to my error. I have a RESMED cpap with a humidifier. When I add water to the humidifier section I usually just add enough to cover the metal plate. That however was not my problem. When I first started using it I filled the humidifier but did not make sure that when I closed it , it snapped. so the air pushes the cover up and it makes that loud obnoxious noise. I called and they asked if I heard the snap and I said no and tried it with them on the phone. Walaaaaaa!!!!!!! no more noise!!!!
Best of lucktoyou!!!

Topic: RE: Help - How to heal a sore from the nasal mask?
I called the pharmacist at a CVS pharmacy and she told me I could use lip balm. Most people lick their lips and ingest some lip balm, so she thought it would be okay. Just thought I'd post this in case it might help someone else.
Blessings,
Carolyn
Topic: RE: Woke up this morn to find out
Thats weird.. I did the same thing. I've been staying with my Mom a few days and she woke me up at 4 to tell me I didn't have the mask on but I did go to sleep with it so I put it back on and slept the rest of the morning :)
Hugs!

Topic: RE: Help - How to heal a sore from the nasal mask?
Hi,
I guess what I have is the nasal pillow. The sore is on the inside of my nostril. I was thinking about vaseline, but, wasn't sure if that is something that could be used "internally."
Thanks for your help!!
Blessings,
Carolyn

Hi, Carolyn.
My son used to get a "rubbed" place on the the bridge of his nose. He began putting some ointment there each night, and it went away. Maybe his skin just got used to the mask. :)
Anyway, I'm not sure, since it's inside your nostril. Bless your heart. Maybe some vaseline?
Consider getting a nasal pillow. If you do not need a mask that covers your nose and mouth (i.e., you're not a mouth breather), you will LOVE a nasal pillow. It sits below your nose, between your nose and above your upper lip. It has a gentle suction, when the machine is on. It doesn't even feel like you're wearing a mask! If you have insurance, I'd sure call a medical supply place and inquire about one. :)
Hope this helps. One day, you probably won't need to use a CPAP! :)
Blessings,
Mary

Topic: Help - How to heal a sore from the nasal mask?
I have been using my CPAP machine with a nasal mask for three weeks now. I've developed a sore in one of my nostrils. My guess is, the mask sits or rubs on this same spot night after night.
Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone know of any type of over the counter remedy that would help/heal this sore spot?
Thanks for all advice!
Carolyn
