Topic: RE: Sleep Study
I am back from the Sleep Study. The tech made an appointment for me to return on 9-4 to discuss the "findings". One good thing (if you can call it that) is that I didn't meet the criteria for the CPAP to be used 3 hours into the study. Oh well, a little over a wee****ill I find out more.

I have had a Cpap for about 3 months.During my 2nd night of the sleep study the tech tried each type of mask to see what I was most comfortable with.I felt clastrophobic and like I would suffocate on any mask but the full face.I was adamant that was the mask I wanted. After 2 weeks of waking multiple times with no seal and feeling worse than ever, I switched to the nasal pillows, which was my least favorite of the ones I had tried.I can't believe how much better I feel .I used a chin strap at first to keep my mouth closed.I don't need it any more.I am more comfortable and able to switch positions easier and can lay on my side. The pillows from the respiratory therapist was slightly different from the sleep center and I was able to get used to it after a couple of nights.I had the incentive of knowing that going back to the full mask was not an option for me.I was lucky my insurance would pay for a second mask during the 1st month.Be open to trying something different and don't give up until you find what's best fro you.Good luck.

Last nite the alarm went off at 2 am again. It said "apnea" so i turned it off and tried to sleep but then it went off again about 2:20 saying apnea again but this time I was awake and not having apnea. So I am kind of discouraged. I did get a nice sleep from 11 - 2 though which is more than I would have guessed.

They usually do one whole day/night of watching you sleep and monitoring you. When they wake you up they will tell you their finding. Usually the doctor is there and will come in to talk to you. If not you will get a call at home with the findings. I listened tot he tech and they said everything looked fine, then the doc called adn told me I had Obstructive sleep apnea and obesity hypoventilation syndrom. I then had to go back for another sleep study where they put me on the c-ppap machine and monitored me that way and adjusted the setting until it was right for me.
The process is usually two days like that if you do have it.
I had insurance that covered medical equipment. They will usually rent a new machine for you. Each months rent goes toward the purchase of the machine. If you have wls and don't need it any more than the med supply place takes it back. I have had mine for 5 years now.I own it now. They are very expensive.. I know 5 years ago mine was over $1300.. I am not sure how much they are now.
I use mine every night. It is very important that you use it if you have OSA. Most obese people die in their sleep and most of the time it is due to sleep apnea, The average age to die with sleep apnea is in the early 40's. It is not something to play with.
Good luck on your tests. It is painless. All you have to do is sleep. It is a little difficult with all the wires hooked up to you but not too bad.. The second night is the one that is hard because it takes a lot of getting used to the machine. But remember just like wls the machine will save your life..

Topic: Sleep Study
For a lack of a better place to put this topic I will ask the questions here.
First of all, I have a sleep study on Tuesday August 25 at 10 am (I work from 12 midnight to 8:45 am) and the sleep specialist thinks I may have severe apnea. What should I expect out of the study and should I think about buying a used cpap or bipap after the study?
Thanks in advance.

Some progress last night - the alarm went off at 2am - i tried readjusting a few times then gave up and took it off. Had a hard time getting back to sleep.
But from 11-2 it seemed to be working just fine!
I really appreciate the encouragement!

Thank you for that explanation - my levels are 16/14. It starts out nice and easy and then goes up to those levels. With the full face mask thats when the buzzer went off - with the nose one I think it goes longer before it buzzes.
I am going to try again tonite to use it all nite long.

Hello Deanna,
The CPAP is the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. The BiPAP- is the Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure.
CPAP- One continuous pressure
BIPAP- 2 different levels one on inhale and a different one on exhale.
Example: You may have a pressure of 8 on CPAP and the OP may have 8/4 on her BIPAP.

Oh that's great that you felt a little better after the nasal mask! Call your medical equipment company and ask them how to silence your alarm. The alarm is if your a leaking for a long period of time.
