Topic: can this be possible? - no more CPAP - after 15 years?!
Check this out.  I had DS wls in March of this year.  I've lost almost 150 lbs compared to  a year ago.  My CPAP is old(6+ years) and air & machine noises from it were starting to bother my family at night even though it was never a problem in the past.  So I figured pressure change (reduction) was probably needed.

Not sure yet - but had sleep study done last night (results take up to 2 weeks).  It was supposed to be a split study where they let you try without a machine for a couple of hours and then put you on a CPAP or BIPAP machine for the 2nd half of the night if you need it.

I awoke briefly twice but they never came in to put me on the machine!

It was my 1st night successfully spent without a CPAP in last 15 years.  I was diagnosed & issued my first CPAP in April 1994.  Techie had an opinion on how things went last night, but advised he was not allowed to give advice and that I "should not make any changes without discussing with doctor".

I really thought I would be getting a pressure reduction, but did not think for a second that CPAP might be going away for good.  It sounds pretty likely that I'll be separating from CPAP permanently.  Wish me luck as I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

time, that is all I can say.  I just keep on trying.  I too woke up feeling trapped.  Now, I am pretty use to it.

 Mishelle,
Thank you for your advice.  I am seeing a sleep specialist and I guess he knows what he's doing.  I do sleep much better without the machine than when I was on it in recent months following all the weight loss.  I see him again in a few months and we'll see what happens then.

Get a copy of the report. I never heard of anyone on a really low pressure. maybe the doctor says you no longer have OSA say if your pressure is under 7.  I honestly don't know.   The report would show if you needed any pressure at night or not.  Just an idea.

They  might have different criteria at that lab than the one you were at before. Get a copy of the results and get a second look maybe

my pulmunologist put me on nasonex for allergies. if your nose isn't clear the machine isn't going to work so well for you.

Also as we get into colder weather, might need to put your tubing under the covers with you so you don't build up water in the tube from condensation

I did an auto pap trail from my DME dealer for a week or two to find out my avg pressure was at 7 and no longer 12.  That was when I was one month post op.

Lot cheaper than a sleep study

I had a similar experience and was just taken off my CPAP machine (in fact, I just posted about this). Tell your doctor and he will order a sleep study to see where you are at.  It's possible you no longer require the machine and that your SA is gone!

Yippeeeeeeee!

Topic: SA No Longer!
I was diagnosed with Obstructive SA in Sepember 09.  I had my surgery January 09 and one month ago the SA Specialist told me I no longer need to use the CPAP machine.  After losing 80lbs and getting another study done, my SA is no longer.

Problem is I am still making noises in my sleep and that scares me a little.   Anyone else with a similar experience?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,
EF

Topic: Alternative to the dreaded sleep tests!
Hello All,

My reason for posting is twofold. I just did an alternative sleep study test since I was placed on a CPAP in March 2007 with an initial setting of 8. After losing 70 pounds, I had another sleep study done complete with the electrodes etc. My CPAP was raised to 9. ( So much for my sleep apnea resolving itself with weight loss, at least right now).  I lost another 35 pounds and took home a CPAP machine from my durable medical supplier and used it for 9 night whereby the pressure adjusted to my needs. I spent 95% of my sleeping time at 12.4 pressure. So I just had my CPAP number raised AGAIN now to 12.

Bottom line is that even with weight loss your sleep apnea might NOT go away and there are alternatives to the dreaded sleep tests.

Hope this helps,

Diana
