Be careful. Not to scare you into it, but I had the same problem, and after 10 different masks form the doctor and 20 more form a friend who is in the business, I said the hell with it. Big mistake. I ignored it, and after 5 years got really sick, wound up in the hospital in ICU for a week, and 7 week in a rehab hospital with a trach tube becasuse all my oxgyen levels were so messed up, they were backing up na I got poisoned, and was looney toones (3 years ago christmas) I was addmitted the next day, and after a fewe days, they wanted to put  a chest tube down my throat, and I refused. I did agree to a temp trach tube, whcih they felt I only needed for 6 months, that was 3 years ago next week. SO After trying all kinds of weight loss and programs, I decide on surgury, hoping that I loos enough to open my neck up and the apnia

Topic: RE: Im glad I have sleep apnea.
This is an old post, but I'm feeling the same as the original poster - on my own, I don't 'quite' meet the criteria (BMI is 39 now) and blood pressure is borderline, no diabetes, or heart disease *YET*

  I don't want y'all to think I'm going around looking for co-morbidities...

BUT, the more I read about sleep apnea (like the single mother who thought it was normal to need pots of coffee just to scrape through the day!)  the more I think it applies to me!!   I have a 30 minute commute to and from work each day  - (kids in the car with me)  there have been numerous times I have been dangerously drowsy on the drive home...and in the last 3-4 months, I have experienced the same thing on the way TO work in the mornings!!!    I know that my weight is a contributing factor to my fatigue (it puts the FAT in fatigue!! LOL)  but after reading up on things, I'm wondering if this is an issue for me!   I've always believed I have bouts of insommnia, because I have difficulty falling asleep (mind won't stop sometimes..and the internet is NOT helpful with this!!)  and I've been a 'night waker' for YEARS, but it's much more frequent now..probably an average of 5-8 times per night where I'm wide awake, only for a moment, when I might need to roll over, or my legs are twitching, but I'm fully aware and generally look at the clock, and digest what time it is.    I've also put my snoring down to allergies, or fatigue...but again, maybe it's more.

My family Dr. has not been too co-operative, but I'm wondering if I should be asking for a sleep study before we even try to have the WLS discussion again??

Of those who were 'trying for approval' were there a lot who were tested and found NOT to have apnea?  I'm just thinking it seems pretty common with most folks on these forums....

Thanks!!

UPDATE:

I had another sleep study a couple months ago.  I have no apnea's when sleeping on my side but still have 7.8 apnea's an hour when on my back.  That is great considering a year ago I had 80 apnea's per hour.

Wile I still have to wear a mask it is set at 5, the pressure is 5, come on, is it even worth it to wear the darn thing... YES cause I am not going to die over not wearing a damn mask at night.

Good luck all, just thought I'd give an update.

I feel your pain. I was put on CPAP and BiPAP and I couldn't tolerate them at all, no matter what mask I used. I didn't have to meet any requirements, but I spoke to my surgeon about why I couldn't use my machine and he understood. I think maybe it would help to talk to your GP or surgeon to see if you have any options.

As for not being able to tolerate your machine, you may have some other problems that are making it hard. I would maybe suggest seeing an ear, nose, and throat specialist to check for sinusitis and such. What they did for me was do an MRI of my head to look at my sinuses, where they noticed inflammation as well as a deviated septum, which was making it hard to breathe through my nose. They treated the sinusitis with steroids and the deviated septum with a minor surgery. After that, my BiPAP was definitely noticeably easier to tolerate, but I still couldn't tolerate it all night, mostly because of comfort issues. It was definitely worth the try, though.

edit: oh, and if you still have your tonsils that may be a problem, too. Mine are grossly enlarged, but my ENT wouldn't take them out for reasons I don't even remember.

Topic: Health Tracker Updates In Time For The Holidays - Profile Integration and Workouts

Today we released a couple of major updates to Health Tracker just in time for the holidays (as we continue on the path to Health Tracker world domination :). These updates include, 1) Profile display of Health Tracker - If you choose to, you are now able to display/share your Health Tracker within your personal profile. This can be kept completely private, it can be shared with only your friends or with the entire ObesityHelp community. 2) My Workouts - You are now able to build and store custom workouts that can be used over and over again. My Workouts will allow you to log multiple exercise/activity items at one time so you don't have to search for individual exercises each time you want to log your activity or exercise session.

Profile Display of Health Tracker .

The profile display of Health Tracker includes Body, Food Log, Exercise Log and the Macronutrient Report. As mentioned above, this can be kept entirely private or you can choose to share your Health Tracker information with friends, family, your bariatric surgeon or other clinicians.

In order to see the profile view of Health Tracker, when viewing your profile or another member's profile, look for the Health Tracker link to the right of the avatar. If there is no Health Tracker link, the profile view of Health Tracker has been set to private.

The privacy settings for Health Tracker can be found in the "Settings" section of My OH. To access your Health Tracker setting click My OH at the top of any page on ObesityHelp, select "Settings" on the left, click the Health Tracker tab and choose the "Sharing" option. Or, just click here to access your Health Tracker Sharing options :)

Workouts

My Workouts makes it quick and easy to log routine exercise and activity. For those who perform similar exercises on a regular basis, with My Workouts you can create a workout consisting of a series of exercises you often perform and instead logging each exercise indivivudally, My Workouts allows to log a single item (a workout) that contains all of the exericses you have performed. Build it once and log it any number of times.

Under My Workouts you will see a list of workouts that you have created and saved. You can log workouts directly from My Workouts by selecting "I did this", choose the day and click "Save"

You can also search for workouts you have created directly from your Exercise Log.

Create your first workout now!

One other addition

For your convenience, in this release we have also made some changes to the account deactivation process. In case you ever have the need to deactivate your ObesityHelp account, you can access this function by clicking My OH at the top of any page on ObesityHelp, select "Settings" on the left, and under the "General" tab select "Manage". Instructions for deactivating your account can be found there.

Have a great Thanksgiving and look for more updates soon!

i have allergy issues, and so I have to use something like nasonex - for a good 3 weeks then i start to get releif andthe machine works the best.

i don't know why you'd get tmj pain, the mask should not be that tight on your face.

Thing is, you will need to use your machine post op, esp in the hospital. So keep working at it.  Try wearing your mask while watching tv. Yes I know suppose to be for going to bed. I think often times we are so dang tired we don't want to bother with it.  But if you can wear it for bits and pieces here and there while waking. it becomes more normal to wear when trying to rest. Work yourself up to taking naps with it if you take a nap.

For me once I got it all working like its suppose to. I finally slept like I have never slept before.  Not nearly as drained as I was prior to the machine. I still had issue with sleeping - kept waking up - but I think preop my pressure probably wasn't where it should be. Now post op - my pressure has lowered and I sleep GOOD.. yay!

Topic: RE: Alternative to the dreaded sleep tests!
When I started on cpap i was at a 7 - then after I had my tonsils removed, and a UPPP where they shave the soft palett -  my pressure went up to a 9 (even did a sleep study to show that)  I do not remember why he said that was a good thing but the doctor did at the time.

a couple years later I did an AUTO PAP trial and my pressure went up to a 12.

Well, here I set post operative - and a month after surgery I had another auto pap trial and went from 12 to a 7.

There is the posibility, that with out all the weight compressing things down, there is less so the looser it is, more pressure is needed to splint your throat open.  Heck I don't know.

My question for you, during your auto pap trial, did you have leak issues?  its suppose to detect that but if its not a newer machine then it might not.  Leak issues could cause the pressure to go higher.  Ask your doctor why an increase occured vs a decress would be interesting to know.

Good luck

Topic: RE: Post Surgery C-Pap Changes
I just had my pressure lowered on my CPAP today. I am almost one month out and I started having problems with mine last week.I would wake up with my mouth so dry or stuck shut and my husband said I was snoring, and my mouth was open.
I was told that my mouth was coming open due to a too high pressure.I went from an 8 to a 6, Im heading to bed soon so hopefully I can sleep tonight,I cant wait to be rid of my CPAP but I have gotten so use to the noise of it I can not sleep in a quite room.. I have had a fan running the last few nights so that I could sleep. My Dr. said she will see me in 3 months to see if I need another sleep study.I suggest getting it adjusted  ASAP so you can get some sleep and feel rested.
