Heather,

I recall in the past someone mentioning that their Doctor refused to perform the surgery if they didn't use their CPAP. It might have been on the main WLS forum if memory serves me right.

I guess I'm the only "lucky" one who has lost weight and am going to have a tummy tuck this Monday the 18th and not only had my CPAP numbers increase, but gone from nasal pillows to a full face mask.

It sure is lonely here at the top!

Has anyone been denied surgery from not using their CPAP prior to surgery?  I have Kaiser and I'm going through a 6 month program and had to answer that question last week in my class.  I do not use my CPAP because it suffocates me.  I don't even have it anymore.  I got rid of it a few years ago.  That would make me nuts if I get denied because of this!  They also asked if I've smoked cigarettes within the last 3 months.  I do smoke here and there.  Not on a daily basis though.  I want to be honest with the questions because if it's detrimental to my health during surgery then I would rather they know.  I could very easily lie about it though ya know?  Which I'm not...

I agree w/ fat cat, You can't have an obstruction  when you are intubated, it just can't happen.
During surgery , you have a tube placed into your lungs that comes out your mouth.

It is impossible to have an "airway obstruction" (which is what sleep apnea is) under these cir****tances.

Well here I am again.  I went to a new sleep doctor at Vanderbilt.  She said try a new DME and some different masks.  I have done that.  I am on my second mask from them.  Still have the problem with my nose.   Switched from BiPAP to CPAP. Still can't make it through the night with a mask on.  The pressure in my nose and head is unbearable.  Stuffy nose prevents me from breathing and I get a terrible headache.

I know I am not thinking straight from lack of deep sleep.  I really don't know what to do.  And the thought that every night I don't make it with the mask and machine I am still two months out from surgery.  I am pretty misable.

Thank you to those *****sponded.

You need to discuss this with the company who is giving you your supplies for the bipap/cpap.... tell them the problem and they can offer different things to help... they are respitory specialists... also does your machine have water or is it a dry system?.... you may also need to do an additional sleep study WITH YOUR MACHINE and get a titrate test. If you have a sleep study demand they use your machine that way it is definetly working for you. I switch back and fourth from nasel pillows to the over nose system.... i get facial rashes.. and have recently went to a smaller nose system and love it... it is a newer type.
