Topic: How did you know when you no longer needed your CPAP?
Maybe this is not the right place. I am at a point where I have quit using my C-PAP after 10 years. My wife says I no longer snore and I seem to sleep fine without it.
How did you decide?

Topic: RE: Will Sleep apnea hold up surgery?
I got tested for sleep apnea as part of the WLS process as many others have. I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. I stop breathing 44 times per hour. I am so glad i got the cpap machine. i was sleeping way too much and tired all the time. Yes there is a delay to my surgery of 8 weeks. I have kaiser, they want you to be on the cpap for 2 months before surgery. but i still had 10 pounds to lose as well, so the wait for me is no big deal. Good things come to those who wait.

Topic: RE: really hate my CPAP
Hi,
I am scheduled for WLS and through part of the preparations and tests I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea....who knew? I was sent to the CPAP place and they loaned me one for a month and during that time I tried 5 or 6 different masks, some were horrid but I finally found a nasal mask that works well and I am comfortable with. Then I purchased the machine. I don't even know it's there most of the time. We cannot have the surgery without our CPAP machine. When we come out of surgery we're ina special step down room (one step up from intensive care) so that they can monitor our breathing and machines. Also, the doctor in Ontario must send a letter to our DMV (dept. of motor vehicles) telling them that we have sleep apnea. If we are on the machines no problem but if we don't use them we can lose our driver's license. This is because of the possibility of falling asleep at the wheel. I would suggest you try different masks, hopefully you will find one that works for you.

Awesome idea. Mine doesn't have a humidifier - I guess I didn't even know they made them. Thanks so much for the idea!
Topic: RE: What does an RI of 9 mean? 1 x Apnea and 24 x Hypopneas?
Hello Kaz,
Your questions are beyond my expertise. I would suggest asking your pulmonologist these questions.

Topic: What does an RI of 9 mean? 1 x Apnea and 24 x Hypopneas?
Had a sleep test last week, just the pulse oximetry with nasal canula.
Got my results today and am waiting for the Doctor to call back and explain it's significance.
Just looking for a little clarification while I am waiting.
I had a 5 and a half hour test. I had 1 Apnea {does that mean 1 episode of stopping breathing) and 24 Hypopneas - which the medical dictionary says is very shallow breathing. My "RI" box says it should be less than 5 but mine is a 9. The page says 9=Suspected Pathological Breathing Disorder.
Can anyone shed some light on this. I am submitting my paperwork for RNY tomorrow and just wonder if I will end up getting put forward for a sleep study, or if I don't have surgery if it sounds like I would go on a CPAP machine, or if it is mild?
Thanks for any help.

I had the same problems with my first nose mask. You should try one of the nose pillow ones. I started using one from fisher pakel called the opus and it seems to work good for me and it's small.

Yes my sleep dr had to send a letter of clearance to my WLS before he would let me have surgery. I can't relate to your problem though I have gotten really used to mine and I can't sleep without it.
My mom got diagnosed with sleep apnea during her pre-op testing and she had to have 60 days of use before she could have surgery.
