Topic: RE: How did you know when you no longer needed your CPAP?
While it's true that the not snoring is no longer an issue if you've been diagonosed, it is a good place to start.

My husband had his surgery 3 weeks (30 lbs) ago and while we never truly believed he would come off the cpap, we did hope. Well, the other night, I went downstairs and he was already asleep ON his side without his mask. Normally I wake him up enough to make him ut it on before I go to sleep. But that night I noticed something, he wasn't SNORING. So I let him be to test it...

I did notice during the night when I woke up and caught him snoring, he would be on his back. I did tell him to roll to his side, he did and it would stop.

So, while he is back to using it, he will be asking for a new study when he sees his neuro in about 6 weeks to be re-tested. By then, he will have lost more weight and we should know if he can come off it or just lower the settings. If it's just lower the settings, we will try again when he hits goal weight.

Topic: RE: My surgeon says no CPAP for six weeks after surgery!
I am just as relient on mine. Can't sleep for even a nap without it, and I would ask your doctor to clarify why he doesn't want you to use your CPAP. Mine told me to bring it to the hospital and they wlll put it on me when I get to the recovery room. That is strange sounding that he also says you won't need it after 6 weeks. Everyone is different, and as far as I know, there is no set time to which you can be assured your CPAP is no longer necessary. My surgeon says that he would wait at least 6 months to a year before shelling out for another sleep study since you may still need it. Hope that helps some!

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea 10 years ago.  This last March I had RNY and subsequently have lost about 100 pounds.  (5# from goal).

I had a second sleep study two weeks ago because my I was having trouble sleeping with my machine.  My tongue would stick to the roof of my mouth.  (with or without a humidifier)

I got the report back and I no longer need to use the C-PAP.  I will be controlling my apnea using positional therapy. (why couldn't they just say, "don't sleep on your back"

Anyway, WLS has eliminated another co-morbidity for me.  I know it does not work that way for everyone,  but it sure improves our chances.

It took me about a year of throwing it across the room - oppositional defiance I guess - but now it doesn't bug me too much (BIPAP 25/18).  And yes, I had to go to a petite nasal mask in order to stand it.

Yes, 25/16 BIPAP - back surgeries - depression - left leg nerve damage - hips/back pain - BMI of 54.5 : sounds familiar to me!!  I have never smoked though.  That alone is a big challenge.  I am looking forward to getting on with surgery and losing weight too so that I can have a life and feel like living again.
