Topic: I have Severe OSA, and need help getting a CPAP Machine
I'm 20 years old, unemployed and living with an elderly relative while I try to get my life in order. My Father has me on his Kaiser but they don't cover the Sleep Apnea Treatment Machines at all. I've looked for financial aid but haven't heard anything back. I've been trying for a couple weeks now to get some help, and just stumbled upon this website this morning. If anything out there can help me or can tell me where to go and look, I would be extremely grateful.

I use the nasal pillows and I love them over the mask. I was given a size small and had to go to an extra small. I went through my cpap provider to arrange to have the pillows. A mask came with my machine but I only will use it in an absolute emergency. (if my nasal pillow is damaged). I also purchased the tubing cover for 25.00. My cat loved the tubing and I caught him just before he took a bite out of it. Yikes. I am hoping my tubing will last longer with the protective cover.

Topic: Having surgery Oct 15 - sleep apnea questions
Hi all.
I have had sleep apnea for a LONG time. Been on bipap for about 8 years. I still have trouble with getting air in my stomach during the night though and waking up in pain until I can burp it out.
I'm not sure what is going to happen after surgery! I am having the RnY, so will have a very small pouch for a stomach. Do I just keep using the bipap machine as usual? Is the air pressure going to damage or undo the staples or anything?
I didn't think to ask the surgeon about this, but will be calling tomorrow to see what they say, but wanted to hear from someone who has been there.
My pressures are pretty high. I can't think of what the lower one is, but the higher one is 19.
Even when I DO use my machine I'm still a zombie during the day. My sleep doctor has me taking Nuvigil. It helps a little bit, but I'm still really tired all the time. I'm hoping maybe losing weight will help with that a bit too.
Any advice?

Topic: sleep study
I've had a Cpap machine for 2.5yrs. Had gastric bypass and lost 86lbs. In 2.5 yrs. I've never had the data read until 6/12 due to Dr. visits for severe dry mouth during Cpap use. Dr. read from the old machine and 1 weeks worth from a new Cpap machine. Dr. says I'm at 100% and see you in a year. So 3 1/2 yrs. without a new sleep study. If I'm not compliant with the new machine, insurance will not pay. My question is : Could my sleep apnea be gone and getting severe dry mouth a result from no longer needing a CPAp? Dry mouth at night has been an issue for over a year.
Thanks for you ideas and thoughts and opinions.

Topic: RE: Frustrated with my cpap
I have the Resmed with the climate control line. At settings of 73, I would sometimes wake up with a dry mouth. Bumped it to 79-80 and have not had that happen since. A good test is to set it at the lowest for 1 night, then set it at the highest for another night and compare. This will tell towards which end you should be looking. Adjust from there.
For me at the highest setting, I started to have moisture condensation in the mask (definitly not dry mouth!), but it was too much moisture.
BTW, I never slept more than 2 hours at a time until I found the right mask for me. Sometimes you have to go through several until you find the right one, but this can get expensive.

If you get another machine, I would recommend an AutoPAP. These can be set at a continuous mode (CPAP) so you get the best of both worlds. The APAP adjust itself contantly based on it detecting AHI events. Unfortunately, it will ramp pressure up due to mask leaks as well. Mine is set at 8 low, and 16 high. I wake up every time mask leaks, and pressure starts to ramp up.
I have a Resmed Autoset APAP and it has a feature, Easy-Breathe expiratory pressure relief (EPR) , that lowers the exhalation pressure, somewhat like a BiPAP. However, this caused the full face masked to seem to "jump" on my face each time the pressure slacked on and off with each breath. Fortunately, its user adjustable, so I set it down to level 1.
My problems were solved when I went to nasal pillows. I was a mouth breather, heavy snorer, and the sleep tech always told me I needed a full fask mask. I paid out of pocket for my own set of nasal pillows and its perfect. Nasal Pillows comes with small, medium, and large pillows so fit is perfect. It doesnt jump when I breath. I set EPR back to level 3 as a result. Ramp time down to 5 min since its so comfortable. No leaks ever. For me, pressure is at 8, and every morning I wake up, the highest I have seen the pressure is 8.4, whereas I saw 15 with full fask mask. Sleep tech said I needed a chin strap, but I havent worn it and don't seem to have a problem now keeping my mouth shut. This is something you can learn.

I snored and was a mouth breather. My hospital test was done with nasal pillows, but I woke up a few times when I opened my mouth and air escaped out of my mouth (In through the nose, and out of the mouth).
I started on full face mask with the Resmed Quattro FX. This was the recommendation of the tech at the Dr's office. Seemed good for a few days, but it would ride up the bridge of the nose and develop leaks, usually blowing air into my eyes. I woke up with sore eyes more than once. I have an APap, so as a leak developed, the machine would compensate by increasing pressure, making this worse. I never slept more than 2 hours at a time with this.
Chatted with an Online DME, and they said many people complained about the Swift FX, and recommended the Resmed Mirage Quattro. I got this next, but it always leaked severly. Not around the eyes though due to the headpiece, but around the mouth area. Still never slept more than 2 hours at a time. Had wake up, reset machine, go back to sleep.
Finally paid out of pocket for nasal pillows, Resmed Swift FX nasal. It comes with small, medium, and large pillows. It has been a god send and I can finally sleep a full night, and wake up the machine at almost the same setting as when I went to bed. No leaks.
I do have the climate control heated line, and I did have to paly around with the temperature and humidity settings to find the perfect setting. No congestion anymore. Iritation where the mask contacts the skin can be solved with Lanolin Cream (Used to treat sore nipples when breastfeeding, available in any supermarket)
What I have learned from all this: You may need to try several setups until you find the right one. Don't blindly follow the "opinion" advice of your sleep tech. Some DME's are horrible to work with.
Good Luck.
