I've seen some concern that after surgery there is a possibility of there being a problem with swallowing air from CPAP machines. I'm wondering if anyone who uses a full mask before surgery had to or was told to change to a mask just over the nose afterwards? Or is it really not something to worry about?

So we are in a similar boat - I'm on a BiPAP and my high level is at 20. I've never had any problems with swallowing air I THINK.
My surgeon actually insists on my bringing the machine to the hospital and they'll put me on it right away. I figure this is good... because if there are any problems they'll know? One thought I had is that if it IS a problem the easy solution would be to switch to a mask that's just on your nose, but after 4 years of the exact same mask I would not welcome the change. I'm super used to it now!
I'd like to hear what your surgeon says when you ask, so please post an update here. :)

My husband is 42 yrs.old was 587 lbs. when he went into the hospital in January 2013 for acute chronic resp. failure. He recently went back into the hospital on May 15-22, for the same reason. He also has sleep apnea. I was wondering if anyone has any information that would help us out regarding this. I'm trying to help him out with losing weight and getting the gastric by-pass surgery. But he doesn't have part B medicare until July 1st. Also the the hospital wants him to be on a diabetic diet/consistent carb diet 4 gram sodium diet. Does anyone else follow this sort of diet and can help out. I've been doing portion control for him since he got out of the hospital in January. Any help would be great. My husband told me that his doctor said his body may not handle another episode with his resp. failure and I'm pretty scared.
I had VSG surgery and took and used mine in the hospital and of course i continue to use it. no problems.

I have found that if I put some cream on my face just before I go to bed, the rubber seal seems to stick better to my face and I don't have the air leakage, also making sure that you wash you mask and seal every day. The dead skin cells seem to stick to the seal and it will not adhere to your face as well.

I don't know, I have not seen my sleep doctor since before surgery. I have an appointment with her in a few weeks. I know I'm fighting the bipap machine a lot lately though. Seems to be too much pressure or something. I've lost 90 pounds since I saw her last, so I'm hoping that we can at least turn down the pressure!
Hello there! I have been on a CPAP for about 3 1/2 years. When I first got the mask it covered from the bridge of my nose down under my mouth, I had the same issue as you. If I tightened it so it didnt leak it hurt. I talked to my sleep dr and he gave me a new mask that has the nasal cushions and a mouth cushion as well since I am an open mouth breather. I would suggest seeing if theres a diff mask you can try. GL
