Topic: Low oxygen levels anyone?? Help!!!
I have unfortunately been a smoker for several years and when I had sleep study done I didn't stop breathing but oxygen levels were in the 80's when I laid on my back...I am now trying to quit smoking before surgery and was wondering if anyone knows if they oxygen levels will ever go back up again?? or have I done permanent damage?? Anyone that has any knowledge on this that could be shared with me will be greatly appreciated!! Jen in Tn

Topic: CPAP AND CAMPING???
Ok, I am going tent camping with my daughter and her Girlscout troop in 2 weeks. I will be for 2 nights. What the heck do I do about my CPAP? Will it hurt me to go 2 days without it? I just started treatment with it 2 weeks ago. We go camping very often as a family also, what do I do? JoAnna Pre-Op

Good Luck, Ed and CONGRATS!! I was denied for mine but BCBS of Alabama (which is who I have) had cracked down on approvals and now say that no matter what, you have to have physician suppervised weight loss for 6 months before they will approve you , so that is what I am working on now!! So far, I have lost about 5 pounds in a little over a week. It makes me mad because if it were so easy for us to lose weight, we wouldn't need WLS anyways!! But I just wanted to wish you luck!! Lisa

I am very excited. Today I received in the mail the referral from my PCP for RNY surgery. I will be calling my surgeon Monday to schedule the date. To let people know what insurance I use: I have Blue Advantage HMO which is part of BC/BS HMO Illinois. My medical group is Dreyer Medical, part of Advocate. Dreyer is a "full risk" medical group. It's my understanding that means if Dreyer approves it, BC/BS will too. Dreyer takes the risk of covering what BC/BS won't. So, I'm very happy today! I'm having my surgery at UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago) and my surgeon is Dr. Joseph Vitello. Wish me luck!

Topic: RE: Still tired - trying autopap
Shelly, I used to sleep and breathe through my mouth all night. Now, with my CPAP I don't think I'm doing that. Everytime I wake up I seem to be breathing through my nose and I don't have "dry mouth" anymore in the morning. I do have a chin strap, but haven't used it because I didn't think I needed it. Perhaps I'll give that a try. Good luck to you! It's coming fast! Ed

Ed, Hope that it works out for you! I am still tired and have been on my cpap since 1-7.....I wish that they would let me try the autopap and see if my setting is right. I have talked to them several times and nothing! Sue

Ok, I've been on my CPAP since the beginning of January. I wear it every night. It doesn't bother me at all. I use the nasal pillows. If I were to rate how tired I am during the day on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being just as tired as I was before CPAP, I would rate myself a 9. I've talked to my doctor about this and he is going to have me try something called an Autopap machine for 2-3 weeks. Apparently, this machine auto adjusts the pressure based on need throughout the night. It keeps a record stored in it, as to what pressure it's been giving me. My doctor hopes this will show that my CPAP machine isn't set at the right pressure (currently 11). I just want to feel rested again and not tired throughout the day. I don't know what it feels like anymore to "not" be tired. Ed

HI, I HAVE HAD MY CPAP FOR 2 YRS. I REMEMBER WHEN I FIRST GOT MINE. IT IS A LITTLE WEIRD AT FIRST BUT YOU WILL GET USED TO IT. IT WILL PROBABLY TAKE 4-8 WEEKS TO GET USED TO. ALSO IF YOU DONT HAVE A CHIN STRAP YOU MIGHT WANT THE RESPIRATORY THERAPIST TO GET YOU ONE. GOOD LUCK!

I couldn't get used to the water droplets in the mask. They woke me up every night, and I didn't have the humidifier on at all. I was ripping the mask off in the middle of the night every night because I just couldn't stand it. I got a new mask with the nasal pillows and it's a dream! I can sleep in any position (I'm a side sleeper too) and it stays put and I sleep so well. No more water droplets either! I had the air leaking out with the old mask, too, but that doesn't happen with this one. Good luck! Mary Ellen
