Topic: RE: Is your first sleep test always at home?
I didn't have to go through my PCP for the sleep study. I had an appt. with a bariatric surgeon to discuss the surgery. Since a sleep study is a prerequisite for the surgery, I just called the sleep clinic at the local hospital and they recommended a couple of doctors. The doctor I went to is a pulmonologist, not a neurologist. Wonder why they sent you to a neurologist instead of a pulmonologist? Anyway, if I were you, I would go talk to the bariatric surgeon first and he/she can tell you everything you need to have done and recommend doctors who are more conscientious than your PCP. My PCP doesn't even know about my sleep study. I'm going to tell him so it will be in my file, but I didn't even ask him about it. Sometimes PCPs have no clue. I used my CPAP for the first time last night. I woke up with the mask in the floor, so don't know how that happened. I guess I was just subconsciously not used to wearing it and took it off. I turned the machine off though, so must've been somewhat conscious. I did seem to sleep longer, but don't know how much longer because I didn't check the clock when I went to sleep. It supposedly takes a while to get used to, so maybe I will wake up with it on tomorrow morning. Again, the best of luck to you! Joni

I found this quizz off the sleepmedicine.com Web site: How sleepy are you? Take our test and find out. 1. Do you snore? 2. Are you sleepy during the day? 3. Do you wake with a dry throat or headache? 4. Do you wake with heartburn or an acid taste in your mouth? 5. Do you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep? 6. Are you irritable or do you have difficulty concentrating? 7. Do you have high blood pressure or other heart problems? If you answered "yes" to 2 or more of these questions, you could have a sleep disorder. Please consult your family physician about your symptoms. Your doctor may need to refer you to an American Board of Sleep Medicine, certified sleep medicine specialist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Hi Vickie, My pulmonologist does a sleep study after losing 50 pounds, and then every 50 after that. i have lost 142 pounds so far and still have it. My setting was a 12 , now it's a nine. I should be doing another sleep study in the next month , so i'll see then. Linda [email protected]

That is horrible that you had to put your life on hold all this time....the only reason that I was asking is because I originally went to my PCP and told him about my difficulty with sleeping and gasping for air at certain times in the night, and once again, just like how he has always done my whole life, he handed me a specialists card and told me to call them and schedule an appointment. When I did call, I was told by the neurologist secretary that since I was calling myself, it would be a longer wait before I could be seen, and even on that day, I would have to have a consultation with the neurologists first to determine if any testing was neccessary because my PCP APPARENTLY didnt feel that I was at risks for sleep apnea.....so I wanted to know the procedure because I am a fulltime student and I dont have the time or money to constantly travel 3 hours for one consultation and then come back for a follow up...I would just like to get it all done in one or two days...you know? I am sorry that you didnt take care of your health problems earlier in life. Sometimes as humans, we put everyone and everything else befroe ourselves and then we always pay for this unselfish act later in our lives. I am happy that you have started to take the time and care for your help....I will pray that your health will improve. Thank you soo much for the useful information and your concerns........hugsss! Hi Jennifer, Here is a link that explains some of the symptoms and treatment for sleep apnea: http://www.medicinenet.com/sleep_apnea/article.htm It is not a survey as such but has good info. I have sleep apnea and am a nurse. I resisted my Dr's suggestion to be tested because according to my husband I don't really snore, but finally gave in and sure enough I had severe sleep apnea. Later my husband admitted that I kind of 'gasp'. So, there are many kinds of problems folks with sleep apnea can have. A sleep study is the best way to find out. Also, if you go under Google or another search engine and type in Sleep apnea you will find many, many sources about sleep apnea. Then you can go to your Doctor and discuss it with some knowledge behind you! Grace and Peace, Margie

Thank Joni - I agree with you! I am using my machine regardless of what he thinks. It's been so great to feel rested. I actually went on two different walks yesterday. It was 74 degrees here in Michigan and my kids and I took advantage of it and enjoyed the outdoors!! CPAP - I'm glad you're getting yours. Aetna paid for mine at 90 percent without any problems What a screwed up system they have. I use the Nasal Air II and I 99% love it. The only part I don't like is that I got a cold and my nose was kind of raw from blowing.... now that I'm using the nose thing every night, I can't get rid of the rash on my nose. I have VERY sensitive skin though so that may be the problem. You're going to love the sleep you get. Just be prepared to have to adjust to it for a few weeks. I sure did!!! Aetna - Can we all say GGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!! I don't think I've updated my profile. I was denied RNY because they say there was no documentation submitted. I don't know cuz Cori lost my file and all my records. But I had them all at home too. So I sent in my OWN appeal!!!! I requested from them all the documentation used in my original determination. They have never sent them. I ended up mailing in my appeal without knowing what docs. they had the first time. But I sent in everything that could possibly be needed. And I sent it all in certified overnight!!!! So, I know have proof of when they received it. It's been a week now. I know they have 30 days and they took all 30 days last time before telling me no. But if this appeal doesn't work then, I'm getting an attorney to fight it for me. I don't want to go another year without WLS!! And it's a covered freakin' benefit on my policy!!! I pay for it in my premiums and I'm gonna get my sugery!!!!!!! You keep fighting girl - we're worth it!!!

I had to go and sleep there for 3 nights all together! It was awful. I couldn't sleep for the first two nights. Luckily, I was able to sleep on the third night and will be getting my CPAP tomorrow. It seemed to help a lot. I was able to sleep for 4 hours, something I have not been able to do for years. I normally sleep 1-2 hours tops. So 4 hours was phenomenal. I should have had this done years ago, but I, like you, had other commitments and put my health on the back burner. As a result, my health has deteriorated horribly in the past few years. If I had known then what I know now, I would have done ANYTHING to take care of myself. I am now on disability because I pushed myself for years and put myself last. I thought college and work were the most important things in my life. But without your health, you have nothing and cannot go to college OR work. I was always healthy and never missed work, always working lots of overtime, usually two jobs while going to school full time. Then when I got to be 40, I fell apart...all at once, without warning. So now I'm trying to repair what I should have taken care of to begin with. Anyway, don't mean to sound negative, but from my own personal experience, this is WAY more important than school or anything else. I know you probably won't think so, because I wouldn't have. People used to warn me that I would pay for the way I was pushing myself all the time, but I didn't listen to them because I was always healthy. But it will hit you all of the sudden and then it's too late. So please, at least think about putting yourself and your health first? Hugs, Joni

Your DH is the one who needs a kick in the pants, not you. It's amazing what jerks the ones who are supposed to love, honor and cherish us can be. Your health is the most important thing in the world because you can't do anything without it, can't take care of your kids or you. So keep wearing that CPAP! I get mine tomorrow. I cannot wait. I have not slept over 1-2 hours at a time for years, but was able to sleep for FOUR HOURS with a CPAP on Monday night. I will be getting my own CPAP tomorrow. Didn't get it today because I had trouble with my insurance, which you can understand because I read your profile. I have Aetna too. What idiots! I had to talk to 6 different people today before they agreed I could get the CPAP. My BMI is 51-something, I have severe sleep apnea, etc., etc., etc. and they told me they would send it to review and get back to me. I finally threw a fit and will be getting my CPAP tomorrow. They have already turned down my request for WLS. I have completed all their prerequisites, except for the last two months of my 6 months diet. We had thought we could go ahead and turn in the papers and they could approve it and then I could schedule the surgery for immediately after the 6 months diet. But no, they denied me stating they had no information, that I had sent in no papers. Liars! The papers were faxed to them. I read someone else's profile where they faxed the papers FOUR TIMES in one day to Aetna and Aetna insisted they never got the papers. If I had known then what I know now, I would NEVER have chosen Aetna as my insurance. NEVER. But I'm stuck with it, so I have to jump through their stupid hoops. So hopefully I'm not going through all this for nothing. Anyway, just wanted to say and tell you to hang in there. Do not let something as trivial as a stupid man injure your health. I cannot believe anyone would be that mean...but hey, I've been married before, so I know how they can be. I highly recommend divorce. Ah, sweet freedom. Anyway, you stick by your guns and hang on to that CPAP! Hugs, Joni

Topic: RE: Split Study for Obstructive Sleep Apnea: What to Expect?
I had to go THREE nights for mine. It was horrible. I could not sleep at all the first two nights, then had to go back again for the CPAP fitting. I am very claustrophobic, so all the wires made me have panic attacks and I could not sleep. Luckily the third night I was able to sleep and was able to sleep for 4 whole hours without waking, which was phenomenal because I can normally only sleep 1-2 hours without waking up. Also yukky was the glue crap they put on my head to attach the electrodes to. About 6 big ol' wads of gummy glue...how attractive! Anyway, it is over now, but I had trouble with my insurance over the CPAP machine. Talked to 6 different people before they would agree to pay for the machine. Or I say pay for it. They will be paying 90%, which will still leave me with $200-$300 co-pay, but that's better than nothing. The CPAP helped and I'm looking forward to getting it to use at home (without being in a strange bed with people watching me on a camera and being all tied up with wires.) The insurance were such idiots that I wasn't able to get it today, but will be going tomorrow at 3pm to get it. You will be in a room all by yourself, just like a normal hospital room with a bathroom and everything. If you have a good therapist taking care of you, it won't be as bad. Mine was horrendous because of my claustrophobia and panic attacks. It's just one more step toward the goal of the surgery. My BMI is 51 and I do definitely have severe sleep apnea, so hopefully it will make my life a little easier while I wait for the surgery. Good luck! Joni
