Topic: RE: Split Study for Obstructive Sleep Apnea: What to Expect?
Chris,
The daytime test is an MSLT, Multiple Sleep Latency. They let you be up for an hour or so, then hook you to the monitors again and make you stay awake for about 20 minutes and then let you take a nap. It's testing for excessive daytime sleepiness. If you fall asleep fast and go into REM sleep within five minutes, you might have Narcolepsy. The EDS (excessive daytime sleepiness) can be due to OSA. You will be taking 4 or 5 naps durnign the day.
As for when nature calls, if your male no problem they give you a container, if female you need to call the tech to unhook you.

My first sleep study is tomorrow night. I check in at 8 p.m. but don't finish up until 4 p.m. the next day. Does anyone know what the agenda is for the second day? The day sounds really boring. Maybe that's the plan, bore me to sleep. The sleep clinic is supposed to have dial-up connection, but I am hooked on broadband so I don't know if I can handle being without my DSL line.
The nurse at the neuorologist's office told me last week that they may have me come back for a third night. I hope not.
I usually wake up an hour so before I my normal wake up time to to go to the bathroom. Stupid question, but can I disconnect myself from the monitoring equipment easily enough when nature calls?
Topic: RE: ICU
Never went to ICU and I had my cpap machine and never had to use it while in the hospital. I am now off my machine all together.

HURRAY!! It depends in how bad you sleep apnea is and your surgeon. I did not spend any time in ICU and did not even need my Cpap machine while at the hospital and in fact Charlie CPAP is retired now After losing 103lbs I don't need him anymore.

Topic: RE: I'm APPROVED!!!!!!!!!!!
congratulations on your approval! It's such an exciting time isn't it?! My surgery is on June 1st and I had to go up for a lot information at the hospital. I asked about the cpap and she said that they just have you use it at night when you are sleeping. They do not have you go into ICU unless necessary.....not because of sleep apnea. I would ask the question to your surgeon.....but I truly believe that it is an individual thing. My setting ins on 9 and not severe......so maybe that is why...
Good luck with your journey!

Topic: I'm APPROVED!!!!!!!!!!!
I got my written approval letter today in the mail!!! I can't believe it, I'm actually going to have WLS. After spending the last year trying to get approved, I guess I didn't quite believe I would ever get the surgery.
Now it's Official!!!!!!!!!!!!! I see the surgeon on the 27th and should get my date then.
??? Is a night in ICU an automatic for sleep apnea patients??????? Or is that just up to the surgeon's discression at the time of surgery?
Topic: RE: ICU
Hi Alan, I had RNY on Dec. 7th, 2004 and was told to bring my CPAP machine with me to the Hospital. When I checked in they took the machine and had it calibrated and tested to make sure it was working properly.
After surgery when I got into my room the CPAP was in the room. I had to set it up and fill it with water myself, but I was not in ICU. Actually, I haven't been able to use the machine throughout the night since ther surgery. I take it off after I fall asleep.
My doctor has had the pressure lowered and feels I probably no longer suffer from sleep apnea. He is going to schedule another sleep study to confirm this.
So.. NO... you won't automatically end up in ICU. Good Luck!

Sounds like I am a similar boat on the same lake!! I called both the sleep apnea doc and cardiologist the same day, last Tuesday. I have already had my sleep consult and scheduled for my sleep tests and every time I try to find out anything from the cardiologist, she says she is waiting for my PCP. Could my PCP be trying to get insurance approval first? Why does one and not the other have to have it??? I am still waiting to hear back from the surgeons office for insurance approval, 5 business days. I am getting SO ANTSY!!! I guess I expected things to be moving quicker, everyone says United Heathcare approves across the board!!!
Oh, and did I mention I quit smoking on Monday? I have kept my cool pretty well, I am finding that I was being pretty lax with my daughter and letting her get away with more so I could run out and grab a smoke. Not anymore!! I may need Super Nanny after all this is done! It ag's me to no end when she doesn't pay attention! But I think Mom's and daughters tend to be like that, I will say it is white and she will swear it is black!!
So say a prayer, I am trying to keep the best attitude, but I am still having moments!
Topic: RE: My teeth hurt?
I had sore teeth for a while after getting my cpap machine. I wrote it off as me clenching my teeth in my sleep. I DESPERATELY didn't want a "mask" so i have the Nasail Air II and you need to keep your mouth closed with it. I was very fearful of having my mouth come open in my sleep. After a few weeks though I stopped waking up with sore teeth.
