Hi! I, too, have just recently been diagnosed with having severe sleep apnea (66 breathing episodes/hour). I've been through the initial sleep test and then a 2nd test whi*****luded being hooked up with the CPAP all night. I have to tell you - I wasn't looking forward to the CPAP, but I had such a good night's sleep, I actually can't wait to get my own. I didn't experience any stuffiness, but my doctor did say that when I get my own machine to make sure I use the heater - he said it doesn't blow warm or hot air, it just humidifies the air so it's easier to breathe. He also said that more than likely once I lose the weight, I'll be able discontinue the CPAP - I just got my surgery date - May 23!! A little under a month until I'm on the losing side!! Good luck, everyone, with your CPAP machines!! Judy

Hi Leslie, I too am newly diagnosed with OSA. I was told I stopped breathing an average of 47 times an hour and was prescribed a pressure of 18. I've had my CPAP machine less than a week now. I am doing OK although I'd be lying if I said I was completely comfortable with it. I do leave it on all night and do believe I feel better. I am waiting insurance approval for WLS and am also hopeful that losing weight will eliminate my need for CPAP eventually. I also experience some "stuffiness". The repiratory therapist told me to be sure and use my heated humidifier and instructed me to increase the heat as needed. I still experience a little stuffiness in the am but it is quickly resolved within 30 minutes to 1 hour after waking. Good luck to you Leslie. It was nice to hear from another new person! Thanks. Diane

Topic: A few Questions
Greetings Everyone I had a few questions about apnea since I have been recently diagnosed (last night). I went for a test last weekend and they told me that I needed to come back so I went again last night and the tech told me that I stopped breathing the previous week 42 times an hour. Is that a really high number or does it just seem so to me? I slept with the CPAP machine and I do feel more alert today, but my nose got really stuffy during the night and I had to get "unhooked" to go blow it. Is this typical? I don't have a cold or anything. Also, after WLS, do most people get off of the CPAP, or is it going to be a friend for life? Just wondering. Have a wonderful day! Leslie

Topic: RE: Split Study for Obstructive Sleep Apnea: What to Expect?
Thanks Jeanne for the reply. I finished up today early with my sleep study, but I still need to go back again on May 3 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. They had planned to have me do several nap studies today, but after one nap, they said they had enough information already and let me go at 9:30. I was wired up head to toe. They had wires on my head, on my face, chest, arms and legs. It took some getting used to, that's for sure. The pulse monitor on my finger with the red light took the longest to get used to. I don't know why it had to be on so tight, ouch! I looked like ET with the lit up finger, LOL! The room was nice and comfy and the staff were friendly. I told the nurse that I wanted to go to sleep at 10:30, but he didn't show up until 11. I don't think I was able to fall asleep until 11:30 or 12. I woke up several times during the night. I had wanted to get up and use the bathroom, but I felt embarrassed to have to call them into the room to unhook me so that I could go, so I managed to keep it in until I could no longer hold it any longer and told them I needed to go, which was about 6:15, my normal wake-up time (go figure). They had me stay awake and that point, but I couldn't shower yet because I was still wired for testing. They told me that I didn't snore, which surprised the one nurse who thought that I would be wrong because he used to think that he didn't snore, but he later found out that he did and had sleep apnea. When I go back again I think they will have me sleep with the CPAP machine with the mask on to see if it improves my sleep.

Topic: new diagnosis, new here!
Hi! I'm new! I am awaiting insurance approval for surgery. Was recently diagnosed with severe OSA. I just picked up my C-PAP yesterday. My presribed pressure is 18! I did OK last night although I did wake up several times. It felt weird! I'm not sure I like the humidifier. Althogh it is a heat one, it felt cold. Also I woke up really, really congested. I have always preferred low humidity climates. I live in the high desert. Nice to read all the posts. Thanks to all of you. I definately don't feel alone.

Topic: Anyone use Oracle Mask?
My doctor is giving me the Fisher & Paykel Oracle mask because I breathe through my mouth when I'm sleeping and can't seem to keep a chin strap on either. I've been using the nasal pillows, which I love, but the therapy isn't working because of my mouth breathing. I'm anxious to try the oracle mask and was wondering if anyone here has any experience with it. Thanks, Ed
