Topic: RE: My surgeon says no CPAP for six weeks after surgery!

What a bunch of horse pucky!  So, it is better to have you potentially stop breathing and die, than use your machine correctly.  I would call your Sleep Apnea Dr and let them know what the situation is.  Have them ha**** out with the surgeon. I had a surgeon once tell me that I couldn't use my BiPap machine post surgery for a period of time.  I called my Dr (a pulmonologist) who treats me for sleep apnea and they immediately called the surgeons office and spoke to the surgeon.  Basically, he was told under no cir****tances was I to go without my machine.  Lo and behold, I got a phone call later telling me there seemed to have been a mix up and of course I was expected to use my machine post surgery.  That it was imperative for my health to continue using it.  Go figure.

As far as not needing the machine after 6 weeks, while I have had significant changes, I am not allowed to come off my machine without another sleep study to support the diagnosis for the need of non-machine intervention.  My insurance won't cover another sleep study until I am a full year out from surgery.

I was told that being on pain meds without my CPAP is very dangerous! MY doc said I could literally stop breathing and that would be it. I can't believe they would say no CPAP. I would have to challenge that!

I brought mine to surgery (as instructed by the OR) and they didn't use it. I've not had it on for 3 weeks and sleeping fine without CPAP !

Topic: Does Anyone Has This Condition?

Hello everyone,

I have sleep apnea for about 20 years now and I did start off with a CPAP machine then at some point I went from a CPAP machine to a BiPAP machine then oxygen was added to it at 2 liters. Slowly but surely my sleep apnea is almost gone due in having weight lost surgery, but I still have sleep apnea. The sleep doctor that I was seeing was wondering the same thing (I didn't believe him on that), my aunt convince me to switch sleep study for another on which I did and I owe my aunt my life on this in which this new sleep study doctor put more care in my first visit then this quack of a doctor that I was seeing prior to this new doctor. After a few visits and a sleep study or two in figuring I still have sleep apnea after all this weight was lost from weight loss surgery. So this new sleep study doctor ordered an MRI for my head and it showed that I have this condition/disease. I am so very happy that my aunt convinced me to different switch sleep study doctor. I just had surgery a few days ago to fix this condition/disease and I hope this surgery fixed it and the only to know if it did or not is to have a sleep study test done. The Chiari Malformation is a serious condition/disease which there in no cure for it. I'm wondering if anyone on this sit has Chiari Malformation Type 1 or Type 2 or Type 3 or type 4, or knows someone that has it. I have Type 1. If so we can be friends and may be share our stories about it. I'm looking for some support and some friends.

Topic: RE: CPAP and Sleep Apnea

I have hit a stall for several months :( and been to surgeon and pcp. My PCP did tons of blood tests to see if he could find the culprit. Everything was normal so he sent me to a sleep specialist. He sent me for another sleep study. Turns out that sleep apnea was the culprit and now my pressure is adjusted and I am back on the losing road.

I'm not from your area, and I'm in the pre-op stage too.

Usually the process goes something like this:  Orientation Meeting; Meet with surgeon or doctor from Bariatric Center; appointments with Psych and Nutritionist.  Some Centers also have Surgical Information Meetings (I had four:  surgeon/psych/nutritionist/exercise).  Some Centers require Cardio clearance.  You've already had the Sleep Apnea test so you're set on that.  Some require a certain amount of weight loss.  (Note:  some insurance companies require "medically supervised diet" for 3 mos. or 6 mos.)  After that, you generally see the surgeon and then your papers get sent in to insurer for approval.  Once approved, surgery is scheduled.

You may want to post general question in the "General Discussion Forum" -- this forum isn't very active.

Good luck in your journey.

Topic: SF WLS- NEWBIE

My name is Monique and I'm in the beginning stages of the journey that many, if not most of you have been through. I have been considering having weight loss surgery for about 2 yrs and am finally going through with it. We had to switch insure because what we had before did not cover WLS. Now that we have finally switched at the beginning of the year my doctor has finally sent my referral. I had to take a class before I got referred and had a sleep test done, the sleep test showed I had mild sleep apnea. The bariatric surgery center is in San Francisco, I live about 30-45 min away, I was curious to know if any of you had gotten your surgery done there? Or can anybody explain to me how the process goes from here? All my doctor said was that the bariatric surgery center would call. But I heard it could be awhile before they do. Could anybody give me insight. Anything would be helpful. thank you so much.
