Topic: RE: Spare Machine
Debbie- If you haven't gotten rid of the machine and you would like to, I need one. I was recently diagnosed with Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome and had a CPAP for about 2 weeks. My insurance company decided they weren't going to pay for it and the company took it away because I couldn't afford to pay for it on my own. My quality of life is detiorating. I have three children and it is a struggle just to get up with them in the morning let alone make them breakfast, play with them or enjoy any physical activity with them. If you are interested I would be so appreciative. Jennifer Boyles CA

Topic: RE: Dry Mouth?
Hi Vicki, I am pre-op and have the dry mouth problem intermittently. I use the humidifier on my machine. I have a nasal mask. I wonder if I open my mouth and that could causes the dry mouth. Just a guess. It certainly feels like a strong desert wind has been howling in the mouth - so much so that my tongue is welded to the roof of my mouth and it feels like my tongue is going to crumble into dust!? I've tried to wear the chin strap - I end up with chin strap and c-pap mask on the floor when I do! I fall asleep thinking "keep your mouth shut, keep your mouth shut..." I figure that's a positive affirmation for sleep as well as awake time! Good Luck with staying moist! Angela in Oklahoma

Topic: RE: Severe OSA... getting approved by insurance for WLS...
Hi Shana, this is one of the things I based my appeal on. My appeal was denied, but not because of this - it was denied due to them not even reading the appeal because I have the exclusion. So good luck getting them to even read the appeal. I took a different direction and wrote to the CEO of the insurance company stating that I felt that this was an unfair practice and that denying an appeal without reading it was essentially denying the appeals process altogether. So they are now reviewing the appeal and I am hoping that they will process it due to the sleep apnea. I presented them with a lot of information since our insurance contract does cover surgical option for obstructive sleep apnea and although I use a bipap machine it is creating further problems by irritating my skin enough to create cyst (I have a history of having MRSA which is treated through hospitalization and very expensive iv antibiotics). Anyway my logic is that I am not always able to be compliant with the bipap treatment, which could lead to further complications. I also presented the statistical information on how poor the outcomes are (less than 60% on the high end) for other forms of surgery utilized to treat sleep apnea...etc, demonstrating that WLS is the only surgery that is a proven curative treatment to sleep apnea. The other interesting piece of data is that there is some research documenting that sleep apnea may actually exasperbate and contribute to obesity. Do your research and present it for your appeal. If they don't review your appeal keep fighting. I don't know if it will work, but keep trying. Kathie

HI Anne, I'm in Louisiana it took about 2 wks before I heard back from the Dr. and they ended up scheduling a 2nd sleep study using the C-PAP to see if there was a marked difference with using it. I heard back about 2 wks later again, and they said I need a C-PAP and would order it... The nurse FINALLY got the C-PAP for me about 1 1/2 months later! I have it now and am sleeping much more at night... if only I could get this darn blood pressure under control now! I hope my ins. company approves me soon! I'm patiently waiting! Good luck! Kimberly

Topic: sleep test in PA
Good Morning everyone. I was wondering if anyone has taken the sleep study in PA at the Center for Sleep Medicine in Lafayette Hill, PA. I did the test a week ago yesterday and have heard nothing. I called there on Monday and they told me it was going to Conference yesterday. I am just wondering about how much longer before I hear something. I want my machine so I can have my surgery. Anne

Topic: RE: CPAP adjustments
Hi Karen- I live in the tri-cities also. Here are some instructions: Unplug the unit from the rear. Hold down the pressure on/off and ramp buttons at the same time, insert the plug. Once the machine starts, let go, you are now in the pressure program mode. The minimum setting is 4, the max is 20. Push the ramp button until the setting you want shows in the window. Pull the plug and the machine will be reset to that number. Use a similar approach to adjust ramp time (can be set to zero) using the pressure on/off button. Hope this helps. If not, go to snoring.com and check out their message boards for other machines and how to adjust them.

Topic: RE: does sleep apnea cause other problems?
Maybe try a different mask. I prefer the nasal pillows. The made my nostrils sore the first few nights, but then I got used to them and like it a lot better than having the mask on my face. The old mask made me hot.

Topic: RE: Dry Mouth?
I doubt that you need the humidifier. You probably just need to get your pressure adjusted down. I have a humidifier with mine and I don't use it anymore because it dried me out more than it helped (quit using it 8 months ago). I had surgery a month ago and have already adjusted my pressure down one unit and am about to do it again, because I am getting dry mouth again at the lower pressure. I guess we are getting healed from our apnea! If you want to adjust it yourself, here's how: Unplug the unit from the rear.
