Topic: Sleep Apnea after WLS!
Hello Everyone,
I am new at posting to this message board. I am 11 months post-op, also down 114 pounds, and I found out last month that I have sleep apnea. I had been having really bad headaches in the mornings and my doctor sent me for a sleep study. I have been on the CPAP machine 3 weeks tomorrow. I feel as if I am still getting use to the machine and the mask. I was just wondering if there were others here on the board that found out they had Sleep Apnea after they had WLS and lost alot of weight.
If there are others I would appreciate some feedback from you on how long you have been on the CPAP machine and how you feel. I am still having some headaches, although not every morning now, and I am wondering if anyone had headaches like me and it took a while on the CPAP machine before the headaches went away.
Thanks!!!
Becky P.

Topic: RE: CPAP chin strap irritating my skin....help!
Hello Lisa,
I too have a had the C-Pap machine for 3 years now. At first I had to wear the chin strap, but then I trained my self to sleep with my mouth shut. Weird huh? Anyway there are many different types of equipment offered. Is all you have to do is contact the office in which you received your equipment and tell them your problem, also I was thinking, could you maybe put a piece of flannel or cotton batting inside to make a barrier between the material? If your mask, head strap, hose, or chin strap are not right, you should be able to exchange them. One thing that I changed is the head strap, it was so wide, they had a narrower kind and it works really good. Hope this helps !! Janice B
P.S. Your insurance company should allow you to submit a request for new equipment at least once a year. Mine allows two a year.

I took it to the hospital. It makes sense. Other machines and, especially, masks, can be annoying and unusable.

Its on your health certificate, exam, once you check it off they will hound you, I have been put on 60 day susppension notice pending approval of rexamination by sleep exam for my CDL,, I don't drive regularly, just keep my license also as a alternate job opportunity. I actually pays off, the physical brought to light my diabetes, gets me a cardiac stress test. good diabetic work up, sleep study every two, more than I would get regularly

Unfortunately you dont know if you need it or not, its not about waking up, its about the blood chemistry,of your brain, how your heart is fundtioning, blood pressure. not even if your snoring, apnea can be ruinging your kidneys you wont know it. but your life if your happy, live it your way, you are spinning a six shooters barrel with a live round for what. it doesnt cost anything to use it. or get a study and be healthy. . . read my post at the top of the list for more info.

Topic: RE: Repost: Lost Over 100 lbs and Still Have Sleep Apnea
I'm sorry you are still experiencing problems with sleep apnea. 85% of patients post op no longer have it...but that leaves 15%. Maybe as you continue to lose it will resolve. I know a man who's sleep apnea did not resolve until 2 years post op-now it's completely gone! Mine was better 3 weeks post op. There are different causes of sleep apnea-not everyone has it because of obesity-it just makes it worse. I've had it since I was about 4 years old, so I will likely always have some issues-but I am grateful they are nothing like they were a few months ago.

Typically they recommend taking the CPAP with you to the hospital. It can help speed up your recovery and prevent other resperatory problems.

Walter where did you get your information that you have to be tested every two years for sleep apnea if you have a CDL? I drove long haul 48 states and Canada for years and never once was even asked if I had sleep apnea. I am not from Delaware, but you said everywhere for CDL.
Just curious. I have not yet been diagnosed with sleep apnea, but expect to be when I go for my sleep study next Tuesday. I'm not driving professionally anymore but I keep my license up to date and your statement caught my eye. Linda
